The United States and Russia have signed a memorandum of
understanding aimed at minimising the risks of in-flight incidents on
military flights over Syria, the Pentagon says. The memorandum,
which has taken effect, covers safety protocols for aircrews and the use
of communication frequencies and communication lines on the ground,
Defence Department spokesperson Peter Cook says. The memorandum does not
set up zones of co-operation or sharing of intelligence and target
information.
Cook says the agreement does not constitute US co-operation or support of Russia's actions in Syria.
The
Pentagon still believes Russia's strategy is counter-productive, and
Cook reiterates that the US approach involves a coalition of 65 partner
countries.
