Pope Francis met with anti-gay US clerk

A US county clerk who refused in the name of her faith to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples said ON Wednesday she secretly met with Pope Francis during his US visit and that he urged her to "stay strong".
Kim Davis, a born-again Christian, told broadcaster ABC she met the pontiff on September 24 while he was in Washington after receiving a surprise phone call from a Vatican official.
"It was really very humbling to even think that he would want to, you know, meet me or know me," Davis said.
"Before he left he said, stay strong," she added.
In Rome, Vatican spokesperson Federico Lombardi confirmed the encounter with the Kentucky clerk, but declined to comment further.
Davis has become a heroine to US gay marriage opponents, after she landed in jail for six days for refusing to issue licenses for gay marriage, which

CIA yanks personnel from US Embassy in Beijing

The CIA has withdrawn a number of its personnel from the US Embassy in Beijing following two massive cyber attacks involving US government employee records, according to the Washington Post.
Citing current and former US officials "who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter", the newspaper said the CIA took the steps because the hack of US Office of Personnel Management records this year could have enabled the Chinese to identify the intelligence agency's employees.
US officials have privately pointed to China as the source of the OPM attacks, but have not publicly declared who was behind them. Although no evidence has emerged that the stolen data has been abused, US officials have said they are concerned about potential counter-intelligence problems.

Study finds increase in foreign fighters for Syria, Iraq

Nearly 30 000 people, including more than 250 Americans, have left their countries to join militant Islamists fighting in Syria and Iraq, many with the Islamic State (ISIS), according to a congressional study of the issue released on Tuesday.
The six-month study by Republicans and Democrats on the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee said the US government lacks a strategy for combating such travel, and called for measures including better information sharing, within the United states and internationally.
Thirty thousand doubles the total estimated number of such fighters a year ago, when authorities also said about 100 Americans had joined, or tried to join the fighting in Syria and Iraq.
Several dozen of the fighters have made their way back to the United States, the report said.
"We are witnessing the largest global convergence of jihadists in history," the report said.

Israel arrests 7 suspects in violence at Jerusalem holy site

Israeli police say they have arrested seven Palestinians over suspected involvement in violence at Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site the previous day.
Spokeswoman Luba Samri said on Tuesday that the suspects were connected to Monday's riots in which Palestinians barricaded themselves inside a mosque at the site and then threw firebombs and rocks at officers outside during a major Jewish holiday.
The hilltop compound in Jerusalem's Old City is a frequent flashpoint and its fate is a core issue at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
It's known to Jews as the Temple Mount, site of the two biblical Jewish temples. Muslims revere it as the Noble Sanctuary, where they believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.
Recent violence at the site has raised worldwide fears of widespread unrest.

Obama admits mistakes in Libya, says West should have done more

US President Barack Obama said on Monday the international community should have done more to avoid a leadership vacuum in Libya, which has been in disarray since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi four years ago.
Obama told the United Nations General Assembly the international community must work harder in future to ensure states do not implode.
The rapid descent of Libya into violent chaos was one of the most dramatic events in the "Arab Spring", the abrupt collapse of long-standing autocratic governments in a number of Arab countries in the face of popular protests.
"Even as we helped the Libyan people bring an end to the reign of a tyrant, our coalition could have and should have done more to fill a vacuum left behind," Obama said.
Rare acknowledgement of mistakes

France cautiously backs Putin call on Syria

(Markus Schreiber, AP)France on Monday gave cautious backing at the United Nations to a call from Russian President Vladimir Putin for a "broad coalition" to fight the Islamic State group (ISIS) in Syria.
Speaking to the UN General Assembly, French President Francois Hollande called such a coalition "possible, desirable, necessary" but said it would have to have "a clear basis, otherwise it would never come to light."
Putin likened his proposed coalition to the "anti-Hitler" alliance that fought together during World War II and said Muslim countries "should play a key role."
"We must address the problems that we are all facing and create a broad anti-terror coalition," Putin said in his first to the UN General Assembly in a decade.

Refusing to obey gay marriage laws is 'a human right' - pope

Government officials should not be forced to implement laws that run contrary to their religious beliefs, Pope Francis said on Monday, answering a question related to gay marriage.
"It is a human right. If government officials are human beings, they have that right, it is a human right," Francis told reporters on the flight back to Rome after his visit to Cuba and the United States.
The issue resonates in the US, where an elected clerk who refused to issue marriage licences to same-sex couples in the southern state of Kentucky was arrested earlier this month and spent six days in custody for contempt of court.
Kim Davis described herself as a devout Christian who could not abide the US Supreme Court ruling in July, which legalised gay marriage in all 50 US states. She has become a hero to conservatives who oppose that change.

UN peacekeepers kill 3 in Bangui

Three protesters were killed in the capital of the Central African Republic on Monday when UN peacekeepers opened fire on several hundred people marching on the president's office, a hospital source said.
A further seven were injured by gunfire as the crowd headed for the presidency to demand the resignation of interim president Catherine Samba Panza following weekend violence in Bangui that claimed at least 20 lives, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Samba Panza is currently in New York attending the UN General Assembly.
After the break-up of the protest, shooting broke out elsewhere in the city, and the hospital source said a teenager had died after being hit by "a stray bullet".
Bangui was tense throughout the day on Monday, with barricades thrown up across the heart of the

Burkina Faso rebels refuse to disarm

An elite presidential guard which staged a week-long coup in Burkina Faso is refusing to disarm in line with a west African peace deal, the army said on Monday.
The peace deal brokered by the Ecowas regional bloc is "at an impasse" the chief of army staff said, denouncing the powerful RSP unit of guards for "refusing to follow the disarmament by creating incidents and attacking personnel charged with this mission."
Burkina's reinstalled interim cabinet on Friday dissolved the RSP guard, which is loyal to ousted veteran dictator Blaise Compaore and whose officers detained interim President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Isaac Zida on September 16.
The unit declared a coup the following day and installed Gilbert Diendere, Compaore's former chief of staff, as the new leader.

Afghan Taliban seize Kunduz city centre

Afghan locals gather at the site of a suicide attack. (Ibraheem Rahim, AFP)Taliban fighters battled their way into the centre of Kunduz city in northern Afghanistan on Monday and seized the provincial governor's office, in one of the militants' biggest territorial gains in 14 years of war, witnesses and officials said.
The insurgents raised the white Taliban banner over the central square and freed hundreds of fellow militants from the local jail, in a major setback for Afghan forces who abandoned a provincial headquarters for the first time since 2001.
The stunning assault came a day before President Ashraf Ghani's unity government marked its first anniversary, and will further complicate efforts to resume stalled peace negotiations.
It was the second time this year that the hardline Islamist movement has besieged Kunduz city, defended by Afghan forces battling largely without Nato's support after it withdrew most of its troops last year.

Obama attacks support for child-killing 'tyrant' Assad

US President Barack Obama took the podium at the UN General Assembly on Monday to denounce those who support leaders like Syria's Bashar Assad, accusing him of slaughtering children.
The barb, a direct attack on Russia and Iran for their ongoing military backing for Syria's beleaguered regime, came shortly before Moscow's President Vladimir Putin was to speak.
Obama said some states prefer stability over the international order mandated by the UN Charter, and try to impose it by force.
"We're told that such retrenchment is required to beat back disorder, that it's the only way to stamp out terrorism or prevent foreign meddling," he said.
"In accordance with this logic, we should support tyrants

"God weeps for sexual abuse of children," the 78-year-old pontiff said. "Youth are protected and ... all responsible will be held accountable."
The reports of abuse and the cover-up first became big news in 2002. Victims' groups say the church has not done enough.
As many as 100 000 US children may have been the victims of clerical sex abuse, insurance experts said in a paper presented at a Vatican conference in 2012.

Other regional weather bureaus, including the Hong Kong Observatory, categorised it as a "super typhoon" as it intensified to reach gusts of 227km/h.

British police have arrested two teenagers on suspicion of arson after a fire damaged one of Europe's biggest mosques.
London's Metropolitan Police said a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old were detained on Sunday.

The mosque was completed in 2003 and serves the Ahmadi community, a minority Muslim sect founded in 19th-century India. The mosque's website says the 2.1ha site can hold more than 10 000 worshippers.

'Death to House of Saud' say Iranians

Hundreds of Iranians chanted "Death to the treacherous House of Saud" outside the Saudi embassy on Sunday as the Islamic republic's leader demanded Riyadh apologise for the deadly hajj stampede.
The protesters numbering around 400, some throwing tomatoes and watermelons at the embassy walls, were outnumbered by police who erected tall crowd control barriers to keep them back from the compound, an AFP photographer said.
The demonstration came after the toll from Thursday's stampede in Mina, near Mecca, rose to 769 pilgrims. At least 155 fatalities at the hajj were Iranian and a further 48 remain in hospital.
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei demanded Saudi Arabia apologise for the disaster.
"Instead of passing the buck and playing a blame game, the Saudis should accept their responsibility and apologise to the world's Muslims and the
