A Russian woman has been jailed for six years for repeatedly stabbing
her young grandson for not fetching the television remote control for
her, prosecutors said on Friday.
The 51-year-old woman "stabbed
her five-year-old grandson three times in the stomach and chest with a
kitchen knife after he did not pass her the remote control," the
regional prosecutor's office in the Siberian
Krasnoyarsk region said in a
statement.
The woman had been drinking but was found to be sane,
it said. The child survived and later told investigators that he was
attacked because "he couldn't find the remote".
The serious
injuries sustained by the boy has left him with liver damage, the
statement added. The incident occurred in February and the woman was
handed the jail term after a trial in a local court.
Domestic
violence, especially under the influence of alcohol is a widespread
problem in Russia, and goes unreported in most cases.
Forty
percent of violent crime in the country is committed in the family,
according to a member of the Kremlin's human rights council, who raised
the issue at a meeting with President Vladimir Putin last week.
In
the first six months of 2015 about two thousand people were killed in
domestic violence in the country, according to the statistics presented
to Putin.
