An Iranian military commander has been killed in Syria while advising President Bashar al-Assad’s army.
Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said that Brigadier General
Hossein Hamedani was killed by Isis militants on the outskirts of Aleppo
city on Thursday night.
He was part of Tehran’s work offering the Syrian regime “military
advice in its fight against terrorist groups”, Iranian state media said.
Brig Gen Hamedani was reportedly overseeing the Quds Force, a special
forces unit fighting rebels in Syria
that has been declared a terrorist
organisation by the US.He was known for leading the brutal crackdown on protesters during demonstrations against the 2009 Iranian presidential election results, and was subject to international sanctions by the UK and other nations.
