UN chief warns Israel against misuse of force
UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday warned against any misuse of force as
he met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem in a bid
to calm nearly three weeks of Palestinian unrest. Ban also spoke
of the danger of allowing an escalation "into a religious conflict with
potential regional implications" and urged efforts to ensure that did
not occur.The UN secretary general told reporters that "security measures can be counter-productive if they are applied without special efforts to defuse the situation before people lose their lives."
Any misuse of force, he said, "may breed the very frustrations and anxieties from which violence" can erupt.
Israeli security forces have faced accusations of excessive force against Palestinians in the current wave of violence.

Warplanes carried out air strikes on the Libyan city of Sirte targeting areas controlled by fighters loyal to Islamic State militants, a witness in the city said on Tuesday.There was no immediate report of casualties or damage from the strikes on Monday. Tens of thousands flee new Syria offensives
Tens of thousands have fled new regime offensives in Syria, the UN
warned on Tuesday, as Russian air strikes were reported to have so far
killed 370 people, many of them civilians.The mass exodus was focused south of Syria's second city Aleppo, one of five areas where regime troops have launched renewed attacks since Russia began its air war on September 30.
"Around 35 000 people are reported to have been displaced from... the south-western outskirts of Aleppo city, following government offensives over the last few days," said Vanessa Huguenin, spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
She said many of the displaced were living with host families and in informal settlements in the west of the province.
"People urgently need food and basic household and shelter items," she said.
Afghan official: 18 police missing after Taliban attack
An Afghan official says 18 police went missing when the Taliban seized a remote district in the north-western Faryab province.Interior Ministry spokesperson Sediq Sediqqi said on Tuesday that the district police chief and 17 of his men have not been heard from since Monday. He says insurgents seized Ghormach district on Sunday.
Qari Yousef Ahmadi, a spokesperson for the Taliban, said they detained the district police chief, who was wounded in battle, along with 13 other police.
Sediqqi says reinforcements have been sent to the province and First Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum, a former warlord with no formal position in the military, will co-ordinate operations there.
The Taliban are challenging Afghan forces on many fronts following the conclusion of the international combat mission last year.
