Comedienne Helen Paul opens Multi-million Naira Film Academy

 


Comedienne & actress Helen Paul has opened a multi-million naira films school, called Helen Paul Theatre and Films Academy, located at Emmanuel Olorunfemi Street, College Road, Ogba, Lagos.

 Some of the courses the institution offers include Cinematography, Acting, Video Editing, Dance, Photography, Basic Presentation, Costuming & Sewing, Hair Styling, Sound Engineering & Graphics Design. The school is a world of total film and theatre productions.


The Glo ambassador said the opening of the academy is a dream come true, having nurtured the ambition from childhood. She explained that the effort is also geared towards contributing her own quota to the development of the entertainment sector, and education in general.
"Right from childhood, I have always looked forward to a day like this –when I will float a school that will help build a better society devoid of charlatans. For some years now, this project has been in the making, and I thank God that it has finally come to stay.
“Our classes are going to be more practical, that is why we invested heavily on the studios and other equipment that will make our students one of the best. We have also created a platform that will make it easier for them to get jobs, before and after they finish from the school,” Helen hinted.
The comedienne, singer, actress, dancer, compere, playwright and journalist, who is currently running her Ph.D programme in Theatre-Arts at the University of Lagos, Akoka, said her academy has been fully equipped with modern facilities that will aid easy learning. Congrats to her!

Woman found in Nigerian bush 'was not in schoolgirl group'

A young woman found wandering in northeast Nigeria who police said was one of more than 200 missing schoolgirls was actually abducted three months earlier, a source said on Monday.
National police had said that they believed the woman, who was discovered near Mubi in Adamawa state on 24 September, was among the 219 teenagers kidnapped by the Islamist group from the town of Chibok in neighbouring Borno in April.
The announcement raised hopes for the release of the schoolgirls, whose abduction caused global outrage, but Chibok elders immediately disputed the claim, saying she was not on the list of missing and did not come from the town.
Now a source with detailed knowledge of the young woman's case said she had told the authorities that she was snatched four months earlier than the schoolgirls in a separate raid.
"She is a 23-year-old woman from Mubi. She was abducted in January by Boko Haram and taken to Sambisa Forest, where they have their enclave," the source told AFP.
"She was taken as a wife by a Boko Haram member called Mohammed. She was already married before she was abducted."
Sex slaves
Boko Haram had used the kidnapping of young women and girls as a tactic even before the Chibok raid, and the young woman's abduction appeared to fit a pattern documented by rights groups.
The young woman said she became pregnant and fell sick and that on 19 September, her new husband's friends bundled her into a car and dumped her in the bush, where she wandered for four days, the source added.
She was eventually found near a village called Plefu in the Hong local government district before being taken to a police station in Mubi, the source said.
"I asked her why did her husband's friends take her and abandon her in the bush without her husband being present. She told me that it is the norm with Boko Haram. Any of the girls they keep them and use them as sex slaves.
"Each time a woman falls sick and they suspect she may not survive they will take her into the bush and abandon her to die."
The woman was now said to be in military custody in Abuja, the source added.

7 witchcraft suspects burned to death in Tanzania

Seven people accused of witchcraft have been burned alive in Tanzania, police said Friday, adding they have arrested 23 people in connection with the crimes.
"They were attacked and burnt to death by a mob of villagers who accused them of engaging in witchcraft", the police chief for the western Kigoma region which borders Burundi, Jafari Mohamed, told AFP.
"Five of those killed were aged over 60, while the other two were aged over 40", he added.
Among those arrested on suspicion of carrying out the killings was the local traditional healer, or witch doctor.
Relatives of those killed described horrific scenes, with the bodies of family members hacked with machetes or burned almost beyond recognition.
"When I returned home in the evening, I found the body of my mother lying 10m away from our house, while the body of my father was burnt inside the house", said Josephat John, according to Tanzania's Mwananchi newspaper.
The attack in the village of Murufiti took place on Monday but reports only emerged after police announced the arrest of the suspects.
"We are holding 23 people including local leaders in connection with the attack", Mohamed said.
"They will appear in court to face murder charges."
Belief in witches and black magic remains strong in many parts of Tanzania.
A local rights group, the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC), has estimated as many as 500 "witches" are lynched every year, based on reports that counted some 3 000 people killed between 2005 and 2011.
Many of those killed were elderly women, the centre said.
The rights group said some are targeted because they have red eyes, seen as a feared sign of witchcraft, even if they in fact that is the result from the use of dung as cooking fuel in impoverished communities.
The centre said that many local people believe that witchcraft is behind every misfortune, from infertility and poverty to failure in business.
Past attacks have included a series of bloody assaults against albinos, as well as against young children.
In Tanzania, albinos are killed and dismembered because of a widespread belief that charms made from their body parts bring good fortune and prosperity.

Relatives torture two children over alleged witchcraft in Akwa Ibom

 
The Nigerian government need to get involved and start arresting people who torture children for allegedly being witches. This is so wrong. Two 8 year old children named Mary Odiong and Ekong Asua (pictured above) were tortured and sent out of their homes in the Okobo LGA of Akwa Ibom State on the allegation of witchcraft.
According to Punch, the little girl said her relatives came after her after one of her uncles died from AIDS. They blamed her for infecting him with the disease. That's so silly!
"The people in my family called me and started asking me questions whether I was a witch and why I killed my uncle. I told them that I did not know anything about what they were talking about. They started beating me. They hit me with cutlasses. They cut my buttocks with knives. After the beating became too much, I lost consciousness. Later, I woke up to find myself in a bush. I have been living on the streets since last month without food and shelter.” the girl told a Punch correspondent. 
The other victim said he was blamed for his parents death.
"My uncles told me that they went somewhere to find out why my parents died. They said they were told that I killed both of them through witchcraft. They tied my hands and started beating me up with native sugarcane and asked me to confess. When I insisted that I knew nothing about the death of my parents, they took me to a bush, where I met Odiong. Both of us have been living on the streets since then,” he said.
Can't the Akwa Ibom state government do something to stop this injustice?

Mother of former Ogun state Dep. Speaker released by kidnappers

 
The mother of the former Deputy Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly and current member of the House, Hon Remmy Hassan has been released by her kidnappers. The woman, who was kidnapped on October 1st at her Omu-Ijebu residence was released in the early hours of this morning. The kidnappers initially demanded N50million but it is not clear if the family paid the ransom.

What it's about:
The story of the honourable Vlad Tepes becomes the infamous vampire known as Dracula, after he makes a deal with the devil to protect his family and his people from invading Turks.
What we thought:
Dracula Untold is one of those titles that are begging for critics to make stupid puns on – cute puns if it's lucky and/ or good, cruel puns, if its neither. I'm going to do my best to refrain from such cheap shots (hey, there's a first time for everything, right?) but the latest retelling of the Dracula legend kind of deserves what it has coming to it.
It's not that Dracula Untold is a terrible movie – it's not – but it suffers from the weight of the story its trying to tell. On the plus side, it isn't quite like those silly myth-busting films (Hercules, Arthur) that try to reveal the much more boring “true stories” behind the legends but, funnily enough, this is the one mythical story where its historical inspirations might actually be interesting. While Bram Stoker definitely did use the historical figure of Vlad “the Impaler” Tepes III to name his villainous monster, it's long been open to debate whether it was more than just Vlad III's name that was an inspiration.
The main problem with Dracula Untold (and it's not the only one) is that the film draws a direct and utterly un-nuanced line from Vlad to Dracula and, in the process, flattens the appeal of both. Director Gary Shore and screenwriters, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, seem uncertain as to whether they are telling the story of a man giving himself over to evil for the great good or if they're simply telling what amounts to a superhero origin story.
Dracula Untold's Vlad may have his weaknesses but he's clearly a heroic figure that lacks any of the complexity or brutality of his real life counterpart, while its version of Dracula is far closer to a super-powered Batman than Stoker's horrific creation. He doesn't exactly sparkle but the king of all vampires, he certainly ain't.
Most maddeningly, the film also offers up an internal struggle for Vlad, the result of which should determine whether he'd end up hero or villain at the end of the film, but by the final act the film not only ignores this clearly defined storytelling mechanism but outright contradicts it. Internal logic is key in this kind of story and it goes flying out of the window simply to serve the money men who clearly want Dracula Untold to be the first instalment of a major PG-13-rated franchise.
And that, right there, is why Dracula Untold is such a failure. It doesn't matter that Luke Evans does a very solid job as the title character, that the rest of the cast more then hold their own or that the film puts its post-Game-of-Thrones aesthetic to rather good use. Dracula Untold is a franchise film of the worst kind: one where any stylistic flourishes – let alone artistic vision – is sacrificed at the feet of capitalism. While Marvel Studios are doing such a bang-up job showing how it is possible to achieve that balance between commerce and art, along comes Dracula Untold to remind us that such a feat is way, way harder than it looks.
This is never more evident than when the film occasionally shifts its attention to Charles Dance's superbly evil unnamed vampire who is Dracula's sire and own personal devil. Dance just seems like he's in an entirely different and far better film – one that seems interested in properly getting into the proper horror (both creepy and campy) that this property calls for. Dance plays evil like no one else so he'll obviously be a kickass baddie in future instalments (that's not a spoiler, we know he's evil and we never think he's not going to make it) but his inclusion here is just infuriating, as it makes everything else look so much worse – not to mention neutered - by comparison.

Second UN worker gets Ebola in Liberia

The United Nations mission in Liberia announced on Wednesday a second infection among its employees of the deadly Ebola epidemic ravaging the impoverished west African nation.
Karin Landgren, head of UNMIL, said in a statement an "international staff member" working in its medical department has tested positive after complaining of symptoms consistent with Ebola virus disease on Sunday.
The announcement comes a week after Landgren said a Liberian employee had died of probable Ebola.
The latest statement didn't reveal the condition or nationality of the worker, but said they were undergoing treatment, adding that UNMIL had taken measures to prevent further transmission.
"All UNMIL staff considered at-risk have been isolated, and ambulances and other locations decontaminated," it said.
The mission said it would extend a review of its actions launched after the first case to investigating the circumstances of the latest infection.
"With Liberia facing its gravest threat since the civil war ended in 2003, UNMIL's commitment to the country is steadfast," it added.
"The mission will continue to do all that it can within its range of capabilities to help roll back the tragedy that is Ebola."
Liberia, the hardest-hit country in the west African Ebola outbreak, has seen more than 2 000 deaths since it announced the virus had spread from Guinea on March 31.
Landgren said last week UNMIL had taken steps since then to educate personnel and help them protect themselves against Ebola, describing staff safety as her "top priority".
She described the outbreak as "Liberia's gravest threat since the civil war", referring to the back-to-back conflicts from 1989-2003 that left at least 250 000 people dead.

South African organization demand $1million refund from Nicki Minaj

 


A South Africa organization, The ANC Youth League - wants rapper Nicki Minaj to pay back the R10million (about $1million) they paid her as part payment for a show that was canceled.

According to South African media, Nicki was paid the money a few weeks back for a music festival - TribeOne Dinokeng, which she was supposed to headline in the city of Tshwane this October but the festival was canceled recently. Now they want their money back. ANCYL said they have written to the rapper's management to return the money. Unfortunately, it's a non-refundable performance fee. Meaning if you pay and you cancel your show, it's on you. You ain't getting your money back. But ANCYL is now saying if Nicki Minaj doesn't want to return the money, she should give it to charity.
“She knows that she hasn’t worked for the money and there are many charities that she can donate the money to. We don’t want taxpayers’ money to be used on boob jobs.” Lesego Makhubela of the ANC Youth League said

Chinese Embassy in Nigeria denies students visa on grounds of Ebola

 
The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has denied visas to some students of Ekiti State University on the grounds of Ebola despite the World Health Organization declaring Nigeria an Ebola free country.

The students were invited to participate in ENACTUS 2014 (Entrepreneurial Action Us), an international competition of young entrepreneurs involving 36 countries slated for 22 – 24th of October 2014 in China in which Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana and Egypt are to represent Africa. But the Chinese Embassy here refused to grant the student visas to go to China.

The Ekiti State University students, who were picked to represent Nigeria having won the ENACTUS Promoted Innovation Competition earlier in the year, have written an open letter about the situation. Find it after the cut...

Kenya blames poor co-ordination for slow response to coast attacks

 
Kenya's intelligence and security agencies need to improve their co-ordination and command structures to avoid a repeat of the slow response to attacks in June that killed about 65 people, a police oversight body said.
The report released by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority on Monday echoes complaints heard last year when Islamist militants attacked Nairobi's Westgate shopping mall. It also suggests the shortcomings are still not being addressed.
Gunmen killed dozens of people in the coastal town of Mpeketoni on the north coast during a night time raid in June and raided a nearby village the next night. More attacks were launched elsewhere in July.
Residents along the coast complained that security forces failed to respond swiftly to the raids and did not offer adequate protection afterwards. Thousands fled the region.
"[A] prompt response failed because of conflicting orders and lack of a centralised command structure at the County level, which could co-ordinate all the national police service resources in the region," according to a report written by the police's civilian oversight body.
"Further enquiries also ought to be conducted into why the Mpeketoni Police and Administration Police officers who were expected to be on night patrol shift had not reported for these duties by the time of the attacks," it added.

Community tensions
Former security officers and diplomats say Kenya's security forces and intelligence agencies are plagued by rivalries that undermine training by experts from the United States, Britain, Israel and other nations.
Lack of co-ordination between the army and police was also blamed when the attack on the Westgate shopping mall turned into a four-day siege in September of last year. At least 67 people were killed in that assault.
The report on Mpeketoni said ethnic, land and religious tensions among communities in the area might have been used to draw in locals to help carry out the attack.
The report said 37 of those killed in the Mpeketoni attacks were Kikuyus, the ethnic group of President Uhuru Kenyatta, who come from upland areas. Analysts have said the raids may have been aimed at stoking tension between newcomers and those who consider themselves indigenous coastal people.
The Somali Islamist group al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the Mpeketoni attacks. It has said it has launched attacks on Kenya to push the government to withdraw its troops from Somalia, which Nairobi has said it would not do.
The report also cited poor police weaponry and lack of accurate intelligence as hampering the police response to the attacks, saying some gunmen were better armed.
As well as scaring residents, the attacks have frightened tourists away from the coast, hurting an industry that is a major source of hard currency to Kenya.

7yr old narrates how 2 dogs attacked his 4yr old brother for over an hour

 

7 year old Osemudiamen Abraham, the elder brother of Omonigho Abraham, (pictured above), who was attacked by two dogs on September 25th inside their compound at Adegboyega Street, Akesan Estate, in the Igando area of Lagos, has given account of how his little brother was attacked by the dogs and how onlookers including policemen stood there without trying to help the little boy. 

Omonigbo is now battling for his life after the attack which lasted over one hour. Narrating what happened to Punch, Ose said;
"We were riding a bicycle in the compound when the big dogs - Jack and Gadaffi - started barking at us. Later, they moved towards us. My elder brother and I quickly ran upstairs and locked the door while Omo (Omonigho), who could not run fast, was left behind. When he got to the door, he knocked that we should open for him and as we did, one of the dogs forced his way into the house with him. We all ran out. Bobby jumped down from upstairs and I also jumped. But Omo could not jump, so the dog attacked him. The other dog also joined in the attack and there was nothing we could do.” he said
A resident of the area who pleaded anonymity, said the dogs were so vicious in their attack that everyone was too afraid to go near them...
"The police came, but said there was nothing they could do. The dogs were growling as they ate the child alive and that sent fear into everyone. Nobody could move inside to challenge the dogs. Everybody was just shouting in confusion and wielding sticks.” the resident said. Another resident says the owner of the dogs, one Stanley Wesley who has since been arrested by the police, was warned to stop keeping the dogs in their neighborhood but he turned a deaf ear
"We became alarmed when he brought a third dog recently which was more ferocious and bigger than the others. Whenever he took that dog on a walk, even adults would be scared. People told him to find a place to keep his giant dogs, but he refused to listen. It was the new dog that first followed those children into the house" the resident who pleaded anonymity said
Mrs Odia Abraham, the mother of the boy, said she was at work when the attack, which lasted over an hour and a half happened
"When I got there, I met a crowd. They asked me not to go inside, but I refused to listen to them. One of the dogs emerged from the corridor with blood stains in its mouth. I ran inside. The other dog, on sighting me, pounced, but I fought back. It later ran away. I called on people who joined me to take him to a hospital. This has been a nightmare I want to wake up from. The doctor at Igando said his condition was critical and we should take him to LASUTH. When the incident happened, I was away at work. But when I got home, I saw parts of my son’s scalp on the floor. The dogs dragged him through the compound for about one and half hours and nobody moved near them. His face was also affected, but thankfully it did not get to his eyes. His two brothers, who survived, also got injured. The seven-year-old who spoke with you has a fracture, which we are still treating. The other, who is 13 years, has a minor injury. “We marked Omo’s fourth year birthday in June. He is a very intelligent boy and he always tells me he wants to be a soldier because he loves to protect people. I am hoping this thing will not affect his brain.” she said
The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the report but however absolved the police of being negligent in helping to rescue the little boy during the attack
“I can confirm to you that on September 25, at about 5.40pm, dogs belonging to one Stanley Wesley attacked and harmed a four-year-old boy and the matter was reported at the Igando Police Division. The report from the Divisional Police Officer indicated that the dogs were being kept to undergo some tests, while their owner had been arrested. The report that the police did not do anything is not true.” he said

Liverpool have to crawl before walking

 
Steven Gerrard believes his Liverpool side has much to learn after stuttering past Ludogorets Razgrad in the Champions League.

Gerrard has scored a 93rd-minute penalty as Liverpool scraped past competition Ludogorets Razgrad 2-1 on their return to the Champions League after a five-year absence.

"Sometimes you have to crawl before you can walk." That was Steven Gerrard's reaction to his side's first performance back in Champions League.

After labouring to break the Bulgarian champions down, Liverpool took an 82nd-minute lead through Mario Balotelli, only for visiting substitute Dani Abalo to equalise in the first minute of stoppage time.

But with Ludogorets on the brink of a memorable shock result, their goalkeeper Milan Borjan, who only joined the club on Sunday, felled Javi Manquillo and Gerrard gave the hosts victory from the spot.

"We are very relieved. It was very important to start the competition off with maximum points," said Gerrard, talking after the match to Sky Sports.

"I don't think it was a very good performance from ourselves but we have managed to take the three points, which is vital.

"I think we will get better as the season progresses.

"We have a lot of new faces trying to find their feet and settle in and there is a lot of expectancy on us because of how well we performed last year but it will take time to get back to that level - hopefully sooner rather than later.

"We could do no more than win. We are not at the standard we were last season, that is for sure,"

3 killed in shelling outside Tripoli

 
Three people were killed on Wednesday in shelling outside the Libyan capital after Islamist militias fighting in the area announced the death of one of their commanders, local news site al-Wasat reported.

The Libyan Revolutionaries Operations Room said Mohammed al-Kilani, a member of the former interim parliament, had been killed in clashes that have pitted the Islamists against local fighters in Warshefana.

Libya's new parliament, which is meeting in Tobruk in the country's far east, has declared Warshefana a disaster area.

Bernardino Leon, the UN envoy to Libya, told the Security Council on Monday that the area was suffering "an unrelenting campaign of indiscriminate shelling, ... causing untold suffering on the part of the civilian population."

Dialogue and flexibility

"Tens of thousands of civilians are now known to have fled their homes," Leon said. "Many have also lost their lives as a result of the shelling, including women and children."

The Islamist and allied militias are trying to capture the area after last month seizing control last month of Tripoli, where they reinstalled the General National Congress, the former interim parliament.

Libya's second city, Benghazi, in the east, is also seeing continued clashes between more radical Islamist militias and forces loyal to retired general Khalifa Haftar.

Haftar launched an assault against the Islamists in May, but his forces have now been pushed out of most of the city.

Leon, who has repeatedly said the Tobruk-based parliament is Libya's legitimate legislature, nevertheless stressed that dialogue and "flexibility" were the only way to resolve the country's conflict.

"The small window of opportunity before us for a peaceful resolution to the current crisis should not be missed," he told the Security Council.

FG defends $9.3m cash seized in SA, releases data on transaction

 
Nigerian Government has defended the controversial $9.3million seized from a private jet by South African immigration on September 5th. In a diplomatic discussion it opened with the South African government yesterday September 16th, FG said they are aware of the deal (money was meant to procure arms) and have presented documents on the transaction process to the South African govt as proof that the entire operation involving the seized aircraft belonging to CAN president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, was genuine. A source who spoke with Vanguard confirmed the on-going discussion between the two governments and said the seized aircraft has been released by the South African government. The source added that the money was seized following failure by Nigerian delegates to declare the money at South African airport
"Nigeria and South Africa are getting closer to diplomatic resolution of the row over the $9.3m transaction. The two nations have opened discussions. The Federal Government has submitted relevant data and documents on the transaction to South Africa and insisted that the transaction was legitimate. It also clarified that the funds were neither laundered nor smuggled for any covert manoeuvres. No launderer will be audacious to fly into a country in a chartered jet with such huge cash. The technical details on security matters, which necessitated the deal had been availed South Africa for screening. Based on initial scrutiny of the documents, the Challenger Jet has been released pending conclusion of a full-scale investigation by South Africa. There was procedural error at the airport, the team did not declare the $9.3million contrary to the aviation and Customs laws of South Africa. So, there was an oversight on the part of the delegation that went to complete the transaction. Nigeria is trying to complete the formality and we are confident that the cash will be released for the purpose it was meant for. Movement of cash for strategic purchase of security equipment by intelligence services is not new; it is a global trend. The FBI, KGB, MOSSAD and others do it.” the source said

I deserve an award for pioneering indigenious rap music in Nigeria - Lord of Ajasa

 
In an interview with Punch this week, indigenous rap artiste, Olusegun Osaniyi popularly known as Lord of Ajasa, who was quite popular in the early/mid 2000s, says he deserves an award for pioneering indigenous rap music in Nigeria. He said the new generation of indigenous artists sing 'nonsense' and still get endorsement, while they have been forgotten. Below is what he said...
"I pioneered indigenous rap music and today it has become lucrative and fashionable. Yet, these young musicians shy away from that fact. They try to hide it. If I don’t blow my trumpet, nobody will do it. But I deserve an award, recognition and endorsement because a lot of people look up to me as their mentor. Look at Eedris Abdulkareem and 9ice, for instance. I’m saying they should take care of the pioneers, but what impact have these new artistes really made in the society to deserve all the endorsements they are getting? I mean, they sing nonsense songs while we (pioneers) do evergreen and clean music. Yet they keep discouraging us. 2face is an exception I am okay with his brand of music, because his endorsements are well-deserved.”

Lord of Ajasa, who shot to stardom in 2005 with his single Otiya, blamed his down slide in the music industry to some decisions he took
"I left the music scene after I got married in 2009 to delve into other businesses. I started this movement long before these small boys emerged on the scene and I paved the way for many of them. When I began, I didn’t know anything about music and entertainment. I was simply making music for the love of it, while 9ice and Olamide were following my footsteps. Whenever I made a mistake, they learned from it and got better. I was just a naïve village boy who came down to Lagos from Ondo State with no guidance. I never knew the big names in Nigerian entertainment at the time,” he says.

Nigeria Military fires GOC attacked by convicted soldiers

 
The Nigeria Military authorities have retired the former General Officer Commanding the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Maj. Gen. Abubakar Mohammed, who was attacked by soldiers at their barracks in Maiduguri on May 14th. The soldiers have since been sentenced to death for that action by a military court.

According to Punch, Mohammed was retired after he was recalled to the Headquarters of the Nigerian Army without posting for months after the soldiers’ attempt on his life.
It was gathered from a top military source in Abuja that the Army authorities quietly retired him last month.
The source said, “The Maj. Gen. has been retired; you don’t expect that to be made public; issues of retirement especially in the military are confidential. The man was at the Army headquarters for some time. He was awaiting posting then but he was eventually retired about a month ago.”
Meanwhile, the NLC, TUC and human rights lawyers have urged the Presidency and the Army Council chaired by the Minister of Defence to prevail on the military authorities to spare the lives of the 12 soldiers.

Zeus, World's Tallest Dog, Dies at Age 5

 
Zeus, the Great Dane who held the Guinness World Record for being the world’s tallest dog, has died.
The dog, whom owner Kevin Doorlag of Otsego, Michigan, described as a “gentle giant,” stood 44 inches tall and was 7-foot-4 when he stood on his hind legs.
Zeus died Sept. 3, just shy of his 6th birthday, Doorlag told ABC News Thursday.

Samsung takes 'genius' pot shots at iPhone 6

 
It didn't take long and most will probably not be surprised that Samsung has launched a volley of ads making fun of Apple's foray into wearable technology and the latest iPhone.
Apple on Tuesday launched a widely expected Watch designed to connect users to the iPhone, but the South Korean firm which has already released a number of wearable devices produced adverts making fun of the California company.
The ads which are titled "It doesn't take a genius", are heavy with sarcasm at Apple products, while highlighting the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 which was released in early September.
The ads feature two geniuses as a pun on Apple store employees which bumble through the features of the latest iPhone.
Samsung is often criticised as a "follower" of Apple products but the company was the first to launch large format smartphones which have spawned a new market segment widely credited with eating into the share of tablet.

Both companies are engaged in a bitter US legal struggle over patent infringements that has often spilled over to social media attacks.
The Samsung phablets as they have become known, have also re-introduced the concept of a stylus to interact with the devices.
Release cycle
The growth of the sector is a factor that inevitably convinced Apple to abandon its smaller-screen only format of the iPhone, much as the growth of smaller tablets convinced the company to introduce the iPad Mini.
While Samsung's products have not always been perfect on launch, the company has adopted a much faster release cycle which has become typical in the fast-moving tech sector.
Apple has stuck to its schedule of releasing the latest iPhone in September even though rumours circulated in June that the company would move its timetable forward to beat rivals' announcements.
The latest iPhone series is expected to be on the shelves on 19 September, though it is unclear when the device will be available in SA.
That hasn't stopped online retailer kalahari.com from announcing the 16GB iPhone 6 as the cheapest for R12 999 with expected availability set for 31 October.
For its part Samsung on Wednesday announced availability of its Galaxy Alpha flagship in SA for R8 999 or R499 on contract from Vodacom.
