Police shot a man dead on the streets of Berlin on
Thursday after he attacked a female officer with a knife, a spokesperson said.
The police officer was airlifted to a nearby hospital for her injuries.
The spokesperson could not confirm whether she had been stabbed.
Passersby alerted emergency services on Thursday morning after the
41-year-old Iraqi, who according to the state prosecutor had ties to
the Islamist scene in Germany, was spotted in the west of the German
capital threatening members of the public with a knife.
The man then attacked the two police officers who arrived on the
scene after they stepped out of their vehicle.
Chief Prosecutor Dirk Feuerberg said the assailant was handed a
custodial sentence by Stuttgart's high court in 2008 for being a
member of a terrorist organisation.
He was issued with an electronic tag on finishing his sentence, which
he removed on the morning of the attack, Feuerberg said.
