A five-year-old girl has died after getting her head trapped in a lift in a house in Weymouth, police today confirmed.
Emergency services were called to the scene just before midday to reports of a young child trapped.
Firefighters
attempted to rescue the girl, whose head had become stuck in the lift
at an address on Emmadale Close in Weymouth, Dorset, but were unable to
save her.
Tragically, the little girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is believed the lift may have been a type of disability aid.
A
spokesman for Dorset Police said: 'An investigation has been launched
today following the tragic death of a five-year-old girl.
'Dorset
Police were called by Dorset Fire and Rescue Service at 11.58 to
reports that a child's head was stuck in a lift at an address in
Emmadale Close in Weymouth.
'Police officers, paramedics, and firefighters all attended but sadly, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.'
Her family were informed and the coroner had been notified.
Roads
were closed around the area to allow emergency services to deal with
the incident and for crime scene investigators to carry out an
examination of the scene.
The
police spokesman added: 'An investigation led by Bournemouth CID has
been launched to establish the facts surrounding the death.'
A
spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said: 'Crews from Weymouth
and Portland attended the scene, assisting the ambulance service and
police.
'Once the lift was stabilised, the child was removed using small specialist cutting equipment.'
