Russia Looks to Cut Economic Ties With Turkey

Russia said Thursday it would be looking to cut economic ties with Turkey and scrap investment projects in a matter of days in the aftermath of the Turkish downing of a Russian warplane.

The televised statement by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev came a day after Russian media reported hundreds of trucks bringing Turkish goods stranded at the border.

6.7 quake hits western Brazil

A large but very deep 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit western Brazil Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake struck at 12:45, at a depth of 604km. It occurred some 50km southwest of the town of Tarauaca and 701km northeast of Lima, Peru.
The USGS had initially reported the quake's magnitude at 6.4.
No immediate reports of damage or casualties were reported after the temblor.

15 killed in Russian helicopter crash in Siberia

Fifteen people were killed in Russia on Thursday when a civilian helicopter crashed in Siberia, regional authorities say.
The Mi-8 helicopter, which was transporting 22 passengers and four crew members, crashed outside the town of Igarka in Western Siberia, some 2 800km northeast of Moscow.
"Fifteen people were killed and 10 people were hospitalised as a result of the crash," regional transportation authorities said in a statement.
Contact with the helicopter, which was headed to an oil pumping station was lost just after 04:00, some 15 minutes after takeoff from Igarka airport, authorities said.

The regional branch of the emergencies ministry said the helicopter had performed an emergency landing but did not elaborate on what might have caused the crash.
Prosecutors said they would investigate possible safety violations.

A young woman who was sexually assaulted by a man she met outside a nightclub tracked him down on Facebook after he mentioned they had friends in common.

Chanel Purchase, 21, found the picture of 22-year-old James Huggett after trawling social media following the attack in April last year.

The man - who did not tell her his name - had offered to walk Miss Purchase home, but pinned her to the floor and tried to rape her just metres from her front door.

On Tuesday, Miss Purchase, from Sheerness, Kent, told how she believes combing Facebook helped bring her attacker to justice.

Tunisia's president declared a 30-day state of emergency across the country and imposed an overnight curfew for the capital Tuesday after an explosion struck a bus carrying members of the presidential guard, killing at least 12 people and wounding 20

The Islamic State extremist organisation (ISIS) on Wednesday claimed responsibility for the explosion that killed 12 members of the Tunisian presidential guard on Tuesday.
The group, in a statement circulated by supporters on social media, said one of its members, named as Abu Abdullah al-Tunisi, blew himself up with a suicide belt on the bus carrying the troops.
The claim, which could not immediately be verified, is in line with similar claims of responsibility made by the group in the past.
It is accompanied by a picture of the supposed attacker wearing what appears to be a suicide vest and with his face masked.

President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday ordered state-of-the art air defence missile systems to be deployed at a Russian air base in Syria following the downing of one of its warplanes by Turkey, a move that raised the threat of a military confrontation between the Nato member and Moscow.
The S-400 missile systems will be sent to the Hemeimeem air base in Syria’s coastal province of Latakia, located about 50km south of the border with Turkey. The systems are capable of targeting Turkish jets with deadly precision. If Russia shot down a Turkish plane, Nato would be required to intervene.
Turkey shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber on Tuesday, saying it crossed into its airspace from Syria despite repeated warnings. One of its two pilots was killed by militants after bailing out, while his crewmate was rescued by Syrian army commandos and delivered in good condition to the Russian base early Wednesday.

It came the day after unidentified assailants opened fire on civil rights protesters in Minneapolis, wounding five, none seriously.
Minneapolis police said they have arrested two suspects in the shooting, a 23-year-old white man and a 32 year-old Hispanic and a search was on for additional suspects.
