Nigeria revels in removal from list of polio-endemic nations

Nigeria on Saturday celebrated the announcement by the UN health agency that polio is no longer endemic in the country. Polio which can cause life-long paralysis can be prevented with a simple vaccination.
Polio is no longer endemic in Nigeria, the World Health Organisation said late on Friday, leaving only Pakistan and its war-battered neighbour Afghanistan in the list of countries where the disease is prevalent.

UN appeals for help for Boko Haram displaced

The UN, Chad, Niger and Cameroon appealed on Friday for help for millions of people in the Lake Chad Basin region forced to flee the violence of Boko Haram and hit with repeated droughts and floods that have brought malnutrition and disease.
But while the radical Islamist militants operate out of Nigeria and UN aid chief Stephen O'Brien said that is where most people have been displaced by their attacks, Nigeria did not send anyone to the UN event.
US and EU diplomats said they were disappointed that Nigeria did not attend the event chaired by O'Brien on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The Nigerian UN mission was not immediately available to comment on its absence.

Police ready to prosecute 2 for Bangkok bombing

Thai police said on Saturday that two men who were arrested in connection with August's deadly Bangkok bombing were the ones who carried out the attack and that authorities have gathered enough evidence to prosecute them.
Authorities are confident that the two men in custody, identified as Adem Karadag and Mieraili Yusufu, are the culprits responsible for the bombing at the Erawan Shrine on 17 August that killed 20 people and injured more than 120, said National Police Chief Somyot Poomphanmuang. Police are seeking at least 15 other people they believe are tied to the case.
Police have said the motive for the attack was revenge by a people smuggling network against Thai authorities for breaking up their operation.

Hezbollah announces truce covering three Syrian towns

Lebanon's Shia movement Hezbollah, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has said that a six-month truce has been agreed for the rebel-held town of Zabadani and two Shia towns in the northwest.
Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah told the movement's Al-Manar television on Friday that the deal was reached under the auspices of the UN with mediation from Damascus ally Iran.
Nasrallah said the deal will entail the "evacuation of armed and wounded men from Zabadani to Idlib province in exchange for the evacuation of 10 000 civilians from the villages of Fuaa and Kafraya to zones controlled by the regime".
"There will be no more fighters in Zabadani," Nasrallah said, indicating that the Syrian army could enter the remaining rebel-held areas and take control.

2 students of the Baptist High School Marke, in Kokona Local Government Area of Nassarawa state, Joseph Idris, SS1, and Rimande Luka, Jss 2, were burnt to death in a fire incident that occurred at about 2am yesterday September 23rd. One of the school's student hostel, the Red House hostel, which accommodates about 50 students, was engulfed in the fire incident, trapping many of them. It is believed that the fire started after an electric fault.
