Texas Zika case raises concerns that virus can be transmitted sexually

A case of the Zika virus being transmitted between sexual partners reported on Tuesday in Texas has raised new concerns about the transmission of the disease, which is typically spread by mosquitoes and can cause birth defects.

The patient, whose gender has not been released, was the first person confirmed to have been infected with the virus in the US.
Cases of Zika being spread by sexual contact have only rarely been reported, and health authorities had previously treated the idea that sexual transmission was possible as theory rather than documented science.

A 5-year-old boy from Chattanooga, Tenn., made a heartbreaking call to the police on Sunday night at about 11 pm telling the dispatcher that “my daddy and my mama got shot.”

The boy, who seemed too young to know his address, calmly tells the dispatcher that “this dude shot ’em” and asks her to “tell the police officers to come.”

The police found George Dillard, 24, and Lakita Hicks, 25, dead in the house, according to News Channel 9. They say the child, who remains unnamed, is unharmed and is currently with extended family.

The boy remained on the phone with the dispatcher for more than a minute, as she repeatedly reassured him that help was on the way. When asked by the dispatcher whether his parents were talking, the child replied, “No. They dead.”

The boy’s father, Dillard, was a gang member, but police have not said whether the shooting was gang related and have not released information about a suspect, reports the Times Free Press.

“We have dual concerns here,” said Chief Fred Fletcher with the Chattanooga Police Department reports New Channel 9, “finding the people who committed this atrocious act of violence and making sure we help the people who have survived it and are affected by it.”

Facebook Is Changing How Your News Feed Works

The key to getting visibility in a Facebook News Feed is no longer just about how many likes and comments a post receives.

The social network is now relying on user feedback to help it deliver a more meaningful News Feed experience to its 1.6 billion users, according to a blog post from Facebook software engineers Cheng Zhang and Si Chen.

"The actions people take on Facebook -- liking, clicking, commenting or sharing a post -- are historically some of the main factors considered to determine what to show at the top of your News Feed. But these factors don’t always tell us the whole story of what is most meaningful to you," they wrote.

Airstrikes Destroy IS Radio Station in Afghanistan

U.S. airstrikes have destroyed an Islamic State-operated radio station in a remote part of eastern Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday.

"Voice of the Caliphate" radio was destroyed by two U.S. airstrikes, according to a U.S. military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief media on the subject.

Army Col. Mike Lawhorn, spokesman for the U.S.-NATO mission in Afghanistan, said U.S. forces conducted two "counter-terrorism airstrikes" late Monday in Achin district, in the eastern Nangarhar province, without elaborating.

An IS affiliate has emerged in Afghanistan over the past year, with a military presence in districts near the border with Pakistan. The radio station was broadcasting illegally across Nangarhar, calling on fighters to join the group and threatening journalists in the provincial capital, Jalalabad.

Afghan officials had said they believed the broadcasts were coming from mobile facilities that could be moved easily back and forth across the mountainous border.

The World Health Organization has declared the spread of Zika virus an international public health emergency and has freed funds to combat the disease.

“This is an extraordinary event,” said WHO Director General Margaret Chan at a press conference on Monday. “It poses a public health threat to other parts of the world and a coordinated international response is needed.”

Artist creates a vagina kayak despite fines

A Japanese artist charged with obscenity for distributing a design for a kayak shaped like her vagina scoffed on Monday at a demand by prosecutors to punish her with a $6 600 fine and vowed to appeal if found guilty.
Megumi Igarashi's case has drawn widespread attention and sparked accusations of heavy-handed censorship in a country known for its multi-billion-dollar pornography industry but where actual depictions of genitalia are banned.
Igarashi was arrested in July 2014 for trying to raise funds online to pay for the construction of the kayak by disseminating a coded 3D image of her genitals.
The artist, who calls herself Rokude Nashiko, slang that loosely translates as "reprobate child" was released days later following a legal appeal and after thousands of people signed a petition demanding her freedom.

India rape victim says she was sexually assaulted again in hospital

A teenage rape victim was allegedly sexually assaulted a second time while in hospital receiving treatment for the original attack in India's east, police said on Monday, in the latest case of violence against women.
The 15-year-old girl has told police that she was raped on Sunday by a security guard at the hospital where she had been admitted in Jamshedpur city in the impoverished state of Jharkhand.
"We registered a case and arrested the private security guard posted at the hospital after the girl's complaint and are now awaiting her medical report," police superintendent Chandan Jha told AFP.
"The girl has [now] been referred to the best hospital in the city for further treatment and rehabilitation," he added.

The girl had been admitted several days earlier to the MGM Hospital after informing police that she had been raped by a teenager in her neighbourhood on the city's outskirts.
"Since the accused in the earlier case was also a minor, he was detained and sent to a juvenile remand home," Jha said.
Public hospitals in India are often poorly resourced, with lax security, while overworked doctors and nurses struggle to cope with a crush of patients and families.
The fatal gang-rape of a student on a bus in Delhi in 2012 shone a global spotlight on frightening levels of sexual violence against women.
It also led to major reform of India's rape laws including speeding up of trials and hiking penalties for offenders, but high numbers of assaults persist.

Pep Guardiola signs 3 year deal with Manchester City

Manchester City have confirmed that Pep Guardiola will take over this summer to replace Manuel Pellegrini, who will leave on 30 June, 2016. Today being the transfer deadline day, City announced the news at the end of Guardiola's press conference. They released a statement today which read:

"Manchester City can confirm that in recent weeks it has commenced and finalized contractual negotiations with Pep Guardiola to become MCFC Head Coach for the 2016/17 EPL season onwards.

"The contract is for three years. These negotiations were a re-commencement of discussions that were curtailed in 2012.

"Out of respect for Manuel Pellegrini and the players, the Club wishes to make its decision public to remove the unnecessary burden of speculation.

"Manuel, who is fully supportive of the decision to make this communication, is entirely focused on achieving his targets for the season ahead and retains the respect and commitment of all involved with the leadership of the Club."

Manchester United and Chelsea both wanted the 45 year old Spaniard but he will now take over at City this summer.

8year old burn victim receives cards from North West and Penelope Disick

8 year old Safyre Terry who survived a house fire and suffered burns over 75% of her body asked that her Christmas card holder be filled with as many cards as possible as it will help boost her spirit.

Safyre who lost her left foot and right hand and had to undergo more than 50 surgeries to graft skin over her burns was very delighted to get cards from many people around the world especially the handmade cards from Kardashian babies, North West and Penelope Disick.

Her aunt Liz Dolder, said the card opening was put on hold for a few weeks because Safyre went into surgery to release some tightened scar tissue. On opening the card holder they were surprised to see cards not only from North and Penelope but also from Kim, Kourtney and Khloe. They got from singer Dolly Parton as well.

In May 2013, someone set fire to the upstairs stairwell that led to Safyre Terry's apartment, killing her parents and her three siblings, who were all under the age of three. Safyre's father before he gave up the ghost held her in his arms, protecting the young girl from breathing in the hot air, a heroic act that ultimately saved her life. She lives with her aunt now in New York.

British scientists granted permission to genetically modify human embyros

British scientists have been granted permission to genetically modify human embryos by the fertility regulator. The Francis Crick Institute could begin thecontroversial experiments as early as March after the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority(HFEA) gave the green light this morning.

The scientists want to deactivate genes in leftover embryos from IVF clinics to see if it hinders development.

It will only be the second time in the world that such a procedure has been undertaken and the first time it has been directly approved by a regulator. A Chinese team carried out similar experiments last year to widespread outcry.

The perpetrator of the Friday bomb attack on Al Ridha Mosque in Al Ahsa in the Eastern Province has been identified as Abdul Rahman Bin Abdullah Bin Sulaiman Al Tuwaijri, a 22-year-old Saudi national. The interior ministry said on Saturday, January 30, said that the attacker who bombed the mosque in Al Mahasin neighbourhood had been arrested two years ago for taking part in a rally to call for the release of detainees.

Two Virginia Tech engineering students were in custody on Sunday, one charged with abducting and killing a 13-year-old girl and the other accused of helping to dispose of the teenager's body, police said.
The arrests came on Saturday after police, following a four-day search, found the remains of Nicole Lovell in North Carolina, about 90 miles (145 km) south of Blacksburg, Virginia, where her home and the university are located.

A 27-year-old man has been convicted of murder after he gave his 14-year-old niece a revolver, which she then used to kill another teenager over a Facebook dispute.

A jury found him guilty of murder in the killing of the teen girl rejecting a claim by his defense attorney that the man was only trying to protect his niece when he brought a revolver to the confrontation that ended with Endia Martin dead.
