Bobbi Kristina is laid to rest, fight breaks out during the funeral

Mourners including her father, Grammy award winning singer Monica and actor Michael Jai White her father Bobby Brown and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Tyler Perry amongst others, but one very notable absentee was Bobbi Kristina's boyfriend, Nick Gordon, who found her unconscious in a bathtub at her home nearly six months ago, they all gathered at an Alpharetta, Atlanta church today to say goodbye to Bobbi Kristina Brown, the only child of Whitney Houston and R&B singer Bobby Brown.

Norwich sign Blackburn 'keeper' Kean

Norwich City signed Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Jake Kean on Saturday as the newly-promoted Premier League team bolster their options between the posts.

The 24-year-old, signed on a two-year deal, will provide back-up to first-choice John Ruddy and Declan Rudd.
"Jake is a good, up-and-coming goalkeeper," Norwich boss Alex Neil told the club's website.
"We needed to make sure we had cover for the goalkeeping position and we wanted to bring in someone who could push Declan (Rudd)."
Kean, who made his Premier League debut with Blackburn in 2012, said: "This is a massive opportunity for me.
"A couple of years ago I was flying high but unfortunately my knee injury has made it quite a difficult road to get back to where I was."

Colombian military plane crashes, killing all 11 on board

A Colombian military transport plane has crashed in the country's north, killing all 11 personnel aboard.

An air force statement said the twin-engine CASA-235 reported a motor problem before it disappeared. The wreckage was found in the Caribbean province of Cesar.
It was not clear what led to the motor failure, but local media said the aircraft was struck by a lightning bolt while flying through bad weather.
President Juan Manuel Santos initially reported the accident on Twitter and said 12 people were killed. He tweeted condolences for the "heroes" who lost their life in the accident.
The victims' identities and military rank have not been disclosed.

Al-Qaeda in Syria attacks US-trained rebel base

Al-Qaeda's Syria affiliate launched a fierce assault on the headquarters of a US-trained rebel group on Friday, while claiming responsibility for capturing members of the "moderate" force earlier this week.

Al-Nusra Front unleashed its offensive on the base of the Division 30 unit in northern Aleppo province, a monitor said, sparking clashes and air raids by a US-led coalition that killed at least 18 of the jihadists.
Seven rebels died defending the base, which Al-Nusra failed to capture, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
In a statement on Facebook, Division 30 said five of its members had been killed and 18 wounded in the fight for the base.
It called on rebels to come to its aid in defending the base, and demanded that Al-Nusra stop "spilling the blood of Muslims."
Al-Nusra accused Washington of recruiting "forces from what it calls 'the moderate opposition' to undergo a training and rehabilitation programme run by the Central Intelligence Agency.
"A few days ago, one of these groups called Division 30 entered Syria so Al-Nusra arrested several soldiers of this division," the group announced.

Indian teenager alleges gang-rape in hotel

A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by six men at a hotel in India's western state of Gujarat, police said.

Five of the accused who committed the crime near the region's main city of Ahmedabad have been arrested, police officer Reema Munshi said.
The victim told the police on Friday that she was assaulted in the Maninagar area earlier this week.
According to her complaint, one of the men who was known to her had taken her to the hotel and assaulted her. He later called his friends who raped her.
"We made the arrests after checking the hotel register and the CCTV footage. One more suspect is absconding and we hope to arrest him soon," Munshi said.
India toughened punishment for sexual violence after the gang rape on a Delhi bus of a student in 2012, whose death prompted mass protests.

New Taliban leader calls for unity in ranks

The new leader of the Afghan Taliban leader has called for unity among his fighters, promising to continue insurgency in his first message.

The audio message purportedly from Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansoor also included comments about peace talks, though it wasn't immediately clear whether he supported them or not.
Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid sent the audio to journalists and others on Saturday.
The Taliban on Thursday confirmed that former leader Mullah Omar had died and said they elected Mansoor as his successor. The Afghan government announced Wednesday that the reclusive mullah had been dead since April 2013.
Mullah Omar was the one-eyed, secretive head of the Taliban, whose group hosted Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaida in the years leading up to the September 11 2001, attacks.

Naomi Campbell found guilty of assault, gets 6 months suspended prison sentence

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has been found guilty of assault following her encounter with a paparazzo photographer in August 2009. The photographer, Gaetano Di Giovanni, accused Naomi of scratching his eye and hitting him with a handbag when he attempted to take pictures of her and her former Russian billionaire boyfriend, Vladimir Doronin as they walked through the Sicilian island of Lipar in 2009.

Di Giovanni said Naomi noticed he was taking photos of her and Vladimir and attacked him with her handbag. She scratched one of his eyes and he needed medical treatment following the incident and took three days to recover, he testified in court.

Naomi was convicted of assault by a Sicilian court yesterday Friday July 31st and received a six months suspended prison sentence.

Witches pushed me to rape 9-year-old girl, says father of 3

A 39-year-old father of 3, Ekpeyong Essien, who raped a 9 year old girl blamed his 2 sons, whom he alleged are witches, for pushing him to commit the crime.

Essien, who hails from Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State, had on July 12, raped 9 year old Bright Benjamin, at Hawkins Primary School in the Calabar South area of the state capital.

He said the girl had approached him for money to pay her fares home, but he simply instructed her to follow him to a nearby primary school where he defiled her with his fingers.

Essien said his life became useless after his two sons were bewitched by one of his neighbours.

Essien is currently in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Cross River State Police Command at Diamond Hill in Calabar and would soon be charged to court.

Obama hails Ethiopian Airlines’ growth

President Barack Obama of the United States of America has hailed the growth of Ethiopian Airlines as the largest commercial airline in Africa.

A statement made available to Saturday PUNCH by the company, said the US President, who was recently in the East African country, discussed the airline’s commitment to have environmental friendly airplanes with its Group CEO, Mr. Tewolde GebreMariam.

The statement read in part, “The President was very happy to see the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Ethiopian flag and he thanked Ethiopian Airlines for being a very good long-time customer of Boeing and the USA.

“He said he had visited the factories in which they are made. He asked for the number of B-787 Dreamliners’ ET operates and Ato Tewolde replied to the President that Ethiopian has 13 in service and eight on order.”

The airline said it flies to 91 international destinations in five continents, including 52 destinations in Africa, 24 in the Middle East and Asia and 12 in Europe

Ebola vaccine shows 'promising' results - WHO

Preliminary results of tests on an Ebola vaccine to be published later on Friday in British science magazine The Lancet have shown "promising" results, World Health Organisation Director-General Margaret Chan said.

"Early results of the vaccine are exciting and promising," Chan said, adding: "If they are confirmed it will change the management of the Ebola outbreak."
More than 11 200 people have died in an Ebola outbreak in west Africa that began in late 2013 in Guinea - the worst on record.

7 Libyan soldiers killed in clashes with ISIS

Seven Libyan soldiers were killed on Friday when Islamic State militants stormed a checkpoint manned by forces loyal to the official government, military officials said.

Five soldiers were killed and 15 have been missing since the Islamic State fighters attacked the checkpoint outside the eastern town of Ajdabiya, near the oil port of Bregaattack, one military official said. Two more soldiers were killed when the government sent reinforcements. Five were wounded.
"Fighting is continuing some 100km outside Ajdabiya," one official said.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on social media, saying it had captured ammunition and military equipment.

Jovetic leaves Man-City for Inter Milan

Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic has joined Inter Milan on an 18-month loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer, his Premier League parent club announced on Friday.

The 25-year-old joined City from Fiorentina for £22 million pounds in 2013 but has struggled to impose himself at the Etihad Stadium where his progress was hampered by injury.
"Everyone at City wishes Stevan well for his time with Inter," the club said in a statement on their website.
The Montenegrin netted 11 times in 44 games for City but never came close to living up to the standards he set in Italy despite occasional flashes of his ability.
A double in a 3-1 win over Liverpool at the start of last season was a rare bright spot in an otherwise difficult time at the club.

Nato agrees on support package for Iraq

Nato allies agreed on Friday on a package of measures to help strengthen Iraqi security and defence forces, including in the fields of military training, demining and countering improvised explosive devices.

Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the aid programme, approved by the alliance's 28 member nations, is designed to help Iraq by providing support in areas where Nato "is best placed to add value”.
Independent analysts said beefing up Iraqi defence capabilities would also contribute to stabilising the southern border of Turkey, a Nato member, and boost the military campaign being waged by a US-led coalition to defeat the Islamic State group.
On Tuesday, NatoO ambassadors held an emergency meeting at Turkey's request on the threat posed by ISIS and the countermeasures Turkey has been taking in response. Bruno Lete, senior programme officer for foreign and security policy at the German Marshall Fund, a Brussels think tank, said the meeting "encouraged Nato to think more seriously about its strategy south" toward ISIS and other radical Muslim groups active in Iraq, Syria and much of North Africa.
Until then, Lete said, Nato strategy sessions mostly focused on the perceived threat to the east: Russia.

Not guilty plea in court for US church shooting suspect

A US judge entered not guilty pleas on more than 30 federal charges, including for hate crimes, for a white man accused of gunning down nine parishioners at a black church in South Carolina last month.

During Friday's hearing for 21-year-old Dylann Roof, his attorney told US Magistrate Judge Bristow Marchant that his client wanted to enter a plea of guilty to all the counts. But because the government hasn't decided whether to seek the death penalty on some of the counts, attorneys could not advise Roof on the issue, the lawyer said.
Marchant then entered the not-guilty plea on all counts.
Roof appeared in a grey striped prison jumpsuit, his hands in shackles. He answered yes several times in response to the judge's questions but otherwise didn't speak.

4 year old Yazidi boy forced to join ISIS terror camp, given sword to behead his own mother

A Yazidi mother has told how her four-year-old son was taken from her to join an ISIS terror training camp where he was forced to learn passages from the Koran, Sharia Law and even given a sword and taught how to behead his own mother.

Bohar, not her real name, could do little but watch as her young son was handed a sword by their captors, who told him 'this is to kill your mother'.

Later, he revealed they were training him to chop people's heads off, shoot guns and hate his own people, at an age when most children around the world are just learning to read.

Her son was never forced to carry out the perverted act, but his mother is adamant if her son had stayed he would have been forced to kill for ISIS.

Nigerian man arrested in Iceland for infecting women with HIV

A Nigerian asylum seeker who arrived Iceland in August has been arrested for infecting unsuspecting young women with HIV. The capital area police are investigating the case against the man, in partnership with the office of the Directorate of Health.
The man was arrested on Monday and will be remanded in custody while the initial investigation continues, according to a police press release.

The police statement says that part of the investigation includes finding out if any more women have been in contact with the man, and whether they might also be infected.

The statement talks only of a serious infectious disease, but chief epidemiologist Haraldur Briem confirmed with reporters that the man is suspected of having transmitted HIV. Neither Haraldur nor Alda Hrönn Jóhannsdóttir, deputy police chief, would discuss the case in further detail at this stage.

'Dead' woman wakes up screaming at funeral home

Prosecutors in Germany have charged a doctor with negligent bodily harm for declaring a 92-year-old woman dead, only for her to awaken again in a refrigerated room at a funeral home.
Essen prosecutor Birgit Juergens said the 53-year-old doctor, whose name wasn’t released in line with privacy regulations, could face anything from a fine to prison time if convicted.

The doctor is alleged to have pronounced the seriously ill woman dead in March after a caregiver found her without a pulse and not breathing at a retirement home.

That Thursday evening, a worker at the funeral home where she’d been taken to heard a scream from the refrigeration room and discovered the woman alive.

Juergens says the 92 year old died 2 days later in a hospital from heart disease unrelated to the incident.

3 sisters aged 5, 7 and 12 years old, all from the same parents, were burnt to death in a fire outbreakat their shop in Mechanic Village area of Oke Afa, Isolo, Lagos in the early hours of yesterday July 31st. Residents say the sisters lived in the shop which is owned by their guardian. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Their corpses have been dropped at the morgue by police officers from the Ejigbo police station. More photos after the cut...

Wrestling legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper has died at the age of 61

Wrestling legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper has died at the age of 61. Piper, born Roderick George Toombs, died from cardiac arrest in his sleep at his home in Hollywood on Thursday night but was discovered on Friday.
Piper had been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2006 but last November he said he was cancer free. Piper was a wrestling icon one of the biggest stars in the WWE back in the '80s, and even wrestled in "Wrestlemania I" back in 1985, squaring off against Hulk Hogan and Mr. T.

Piper was admitted into the WWE Hall of Fame back in 2005 and was one of the top 50 villains in the history of the WWE. Piper had a long relationship with WWE the last time he last wrestled was back in 2008, but has appeared on various WWE shows up until 2014.

Piper is survived by his wife Kitty and their 4 kids. 3 daughters and son Colton.

Pilot & 3 passengers killed after Saudi jet crashes into car auction in London

Three passengers and the pilot of a Saudi-owned private jet died after the aircraft crashed into a car auction near Farnborough, Hampshire, London. The small private jet overshot the runway at Blackbushe Airport on the Hampshire-Surrey border, before ploughing into the neighbouring car auction site, destroying at least 15 cars.

The aircraft, a £7million Brazilian-built Embraer Phenom 300 was completely destroyed in the crash, leaving behind a fireball and large plume of toxic black smoke.

Kukuwa-Gari village in Yobe raided, 10 killed in a revenge attack by Boko Haram gunmen

According to Baba Nuhu, a member of the local government council, 32 Boko Haram militants on motorcycles raided the village of Kukuwa-Gari, Yobe state around 10:30 pm on Wednesday July 29 killing 10 people including two women.

"They burnt more than half of the village, including food silos and livestock on which the people depend for their livelihood."

Confirming the report that the attack was apparently in reprisal, he added,

"The attack came two days after two Boko Haram members who came into the village were identified by residents and mobbed to death,"

News of the attack was slow to emerge because the insurgents have destroyed telecom masts since the insurgency began in 2009. -AFP
