Sheriff's deputy shot 'in cold blood' in Houston
Authorities were searching on Saturday for the suspect in the death of a uniformed sheriff's deputy who was shot several times while filling up his patrol car at a suburban Houston fuel station, authorities said.
Police were speaking with a person who has information about on Friday's shooting, Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Deputy Thomas Gilliland said, but that the person is not under arrest, nor is he a suspect or person of interest. No one has been charged and the intensive search for a suspect is ongoing, he said.
Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, was pumping fuel at about 20:30 on Friday when a man approached him from behind and fired multiple shots, Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Ryan Sullivan told The Associated Press.
Police described the suspect as a man believed to be between 20 and 25 years old. He was driving a pickup-style truck.
Goforth, a 10-year veteran of the force, had a wife and two children, according to Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman.
"In my 45 years in law enforcement, I can't recall another incident so cold-blooded and cowardly," Hickman said.
No motive was determined for the shooting, he said.
Goforth had travelled to the Chevron station after responding to a routine car accident, Gilliland said.
"He was pumping gas into his vehicle and the male suspect came up behind him and shot the deputy multiple times," Gilliland told the Houston Chronicle. "The deputy fell to ground. The suspect came over and shot the deputy again multiple times as he lay on the ground."
He said Goforth died at the scene.
Detectives were checking security camera video for possible clues.
Harris County Sheriff's deputies and homicide investigators joined officers from other agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Houston Police Department, in the search.
India village council orders rapes of two sisters
The rights group Amnesty International has called on Indian authorities to ensure the safety of two young women, after their local village council ordered them to be raped and paraded naked after their brother eloped with a married woman.
The unelected all-male village council in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, on July 30 ordered that a woman, 23, and her sister, 15, be raped and paraded naked with their faces blackened after their brother ran away with a woman from the village's dominant Jat caste.
The sisters and their family, from the lower Dalit caste, have since fled the village and are hiding in New Delhi.
Earlier this month, the older sister filed a petition before India's Supreme Court seeking protection for her family so they can return to their home.
On August 18, the Supreme Court ordered Uttar Pradesh authorities to reply to the petition by September 15.
But one of their brothers told Amnesty: “After we went to the Supreme Court, the villagers are even more aggressive".
“In the panchayat [council], the Jat decision is final. They don’t listen to us. The police don’t listen to us. The police said anyone can be murdered now," he said.

Satellite images confirm Palmyra temple destruction: UN
Satellite images confirm the destruction of the Baal Shamin temple in Syria's Palmyra, the United Nations said on Friday, after international condemnation of the act claimed by the Islamic State group (ISIS).
The UN training and research agency UNITAR said its satellite programme had compared images of the site taken on June 26 and again on August 27.
"We confirm the destruction of the main building, while surrounding columns seem to be less affected," UNITAR said in a statement.
The grainy images show that the famed temple, considered the second-most significant in ancient Palmyra, "has been blown to bits," spokesperson Einar Bjorgo told AFP.
"It has been flattened," he said.
The destruction, which reportedly happened last Sunday, just days after ISIS fighters beheaded the 82-year-old retired chief archaeologist of Palmyra, sparked widespread outrage.
The UN has slammed the destruction of the temple as a "war crime", and the act has raised concerns for the rest of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
Famed for its well-preserved Greco-Roman ruins, Palmyra was seized from government forces in May, prompting concerns ISIS might destroy it as it has other heritage sites in parts of Syria and Iraq under its control.
ISIS published images earlier this week showing militants placing barrels and small containers, presumably containing explosives, into the temple, as well as similar containers placed on parts of its columns.
The images, which appeared to be screenshots from a video, also showed a large explosion apparently as the temple was blown up, and then a pile of rubble at its former location.
A year and counting: Mars isolation experiment begins
Six people shut themselves inside a dome for a year in Hawaii on Friday, in the longest US isolation experiment aimed at helping Nasa prepare for a pioneering journey to Mars.
The crew includes a French astrobiologist, a German physicist and four Americans - a pilot, an architect, a doctor/journalist and a soil scientist.
They are based on a barren, northern slope of Mauna Loa, living inside a dome that is 11m in diameter and 6m tall.
In a place with no animals and little vegetation around, they closed themselves in at 15:00 Hawaii time (01:00 GMT on Saturday), marking the official start to the 12-month mission.
The men and women have their own small rooms, with space for a sleeping cot and desk, and will spend their days eating food like powdered cheese and canned tuna, only going outside if dressed in a spacesuit, and having limited access to the internet.
So what kind of person wants to spend a year this way?
Crew member Sheyna Gifford described the team as "six people who want to change the world by making it possible for people to leave it at will", she wrote on her blog, LivefromMars.life.
Architect Tristan Bassingthwaighte said he will be "studying architectural methods for creating a more habitable environment and increasing our capability to live in the extreme environments of Earth and other worlds", according to his LinkedIn page.
"Hoping to learn a lot!" he added.
Pioneer troubles
Any astronauts that go to Mars are facing a trip that would last far longer than the six months that humans typically spend at the orbiting International Space Station.
Nasa's current technology can send a robotic mission to the Red Planet in eight months, and the space agency estimates that a human mission would take between one and three years.
With all that time spent in a cramped space without access to fresh air, food, or privacy, conflicts are certain to occur.
The US space agency is studying how these scenarios play out on Earth - in a program called Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS) - before pressing on toward Mars, which Nasa hopes to reach sometime in the 2030s.

Inmate gets arrested again after refusing to leave jail
An Arizona man
arrested on alleged possession of meth apparently liked the jail in
Maricopa County so much that he didn't want to leave.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio said that officers forcibly escorted Spurlock away from the lock-up.
Police said when
Spurlock was finally out of the jail, he ran to a marked semi-truck
belonging to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and unsuccessfully
attempted to start it up, according to the Associated Press.
Officials said Spurlock told them he planned to sell the truck.
Spurlock was arrested and is back in jail on a burglary charge and is being held without bond.
David Spurlock, 29, was released on Wednesday for the drug charges, but caused trouble when he refused to vacate the premises.
"Maybe he liked the food so much, he thought he would take a truck load of my vegetarian meals with him," Arpaio said.

US Police officer shoots hospital patient
A Houston police officer working a second job as a hospital security guard shot and critically wounded on Thursday a patient who had been combative with staff and fought with security, a Houston police spokesperson said.
The officer was one of two off-duty police officers working as security at St Joseph Medical Center in Houston who were called into the room to subdue the suspect, described as a 26-year-old male, the spokesperson said.
The suspect fought with the officers, injuring both. One of the officers deployed his Taser but that did not appear to have any effect, spokesperson Kese Smith said.
"The struggle continued to escalate, at which point, the second officer, fearing for his safety and that of his fellow officer, discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect," Smith said.
Houston Police did not identify the patient and did not have information on why he sought care at the hospital.
The officers, veterans of 21 and 30 years on the force, suffered lacerations to their heads and one appears to have a severe concussion. They were being treated at the hospital and have not been identified, he said.

Nigeria-bound terror chief coming on invitation
According to a report by Daily Trust, wanted terrorist, Ahmed Al-Assir, who was
arrested in Lebanon on his way to Nigeria, was coming on the
invitation of a foreign company operating in the country.
Sources in Nigeria’s security circles, who spoke to Daily Trust on
condition of anonymity, said the visa was issued by a Foreign Service
official in Beirut based on that invitation.
According to the sources, without a letter of invitation the hate preacher’s visa application would not have been approved. Discussions within the security circles in Nigeria centred on a popular middle-eastern company operating in Nigeria as the originator of the invitation letter for the issuance of the visa. A source said allegations that a bribe of about $8,000 was paid by Al-Assir to obtain the visa has not been confirmed. Security sources however said even if a bribe that big was offered, it was highly unlikely that the official who issued the visa received such money alone. It was hinted that the intelligence report of the plans of Al-Assir to visit Nigeria was given to the Lebanese authorities by Hezbollah. He pointed out that the lack of an active Foreign Service liaison with security and intelligence organization at the Nigeria embassy in Beirut made it difficult to share such intelligence operations with Nigeria directly.

National Zoo's Surviving Newborn Panda Is Male
The National Zoo's panda parents, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, have another son.
The zoo announced Friday morning that the surviving panda cub is male and the son of the zoo's male panda Tian Tian.
Mei Xiang (may-SHONG) gave birth to twins Saturday, but the smaller cub
died Wednesday. Officials say that smaller cub was also a male fathered
by Tian Tian.
The cub's cause of death hasn't been determined. Keepers say the larger cub is doing well and growing.
Tian Tian is the father of Mei Xiang's other cubs, daughter Bao Bao and
son Tai Shan. During this year's panda breeding, Mei Xiang was
artificially inseminated with semen from Tian Tian and a panda in China that was deemed a good genetic match.
