Liverpool have to crawl before walking
Steven Gerrard believes his Liverpool side has much to learn after stuttering past Ludogorets Razgrad in the Champions League.
Gerrard has scored a 93rd-minute penalty as Liverpool scraped past competition Ludogorets Razgrad 2-1 on their return to the Champions League after a five-year absence.
"Sometimes you have to crawl before you can walk." That was Steven Gerrard's reaction to his side's first performance back in Champions League.
After labouring to break the Bulgarian champions down, Liverpool took an 82nd-minute lead through Mario Balotelli, only for visiting substitute Dani Abalo to equalise in the first minute of stoppage time.
But with Ludogorets on the brink of a memorable shock result, their goalkeeper Milan Borjan, who only joined the club on Sunday, felled Javi Manquillo and Gerrard gave the hosts victory from the spot.
"We are very relieved. It was very important to start the competition off with maximum points," said Gerrard, talking after the match to Sky Sports.
"I don't think it was a very good performance from ourselves but we have managed to take the three points, which is vital.
"I think we will get better as the season progresses.
"We have a lot of new faces trying to find their feet and settle in and there is a lot of expectancy on us because of how well we performed last year but it will take time to get back to that level - hopefully sooner rather than later.
"We could do no more than win. We are not at the standard we were last season, that is for sure,"

3 killed in shelling outside Tripoli
Three people were killed on Wednesday in shelling outside the Libyan capital after Islamist militias fighting in the area announced the death of one of their commanders, local news site al-Wasat reported.
The Libyan Revolutionaries Operations Room said Mohammed al-Kilani, a member of the former interim parliament, had been killed in clashes that have pitted the Islamists against local fighters in Warshefana.
Libya's new parliament, which is meeting in Tobruk in the country's far east, has declared Warshefana a disaster area.
Bernardino Leon, the UN envoy to Libya, told the Security Council on Monday that the area was suffering "an unrelenting campaign of indiscriminate shelling, ... causing untold suffering on the part of the civilian population."
Dialogue and flexibility
"Tens of thousands of civilians are now known to have fled their homes," Leon said. "Many have also lost their lives as a result of the shelling, including women and children."
The Islamist and allied militias are trying to capture the area after last month seizing control last month of Tripoli, where they reinstalled the General National Congress, the former interim parliament.
Libya's second city, Benghazi, in the east, is also seeing continued clashes between more radical Islamist militias and forces loyal to retired general Khalifa Haftar.
Haftar launched an assault against the Islamists in May, but his forces have now been pushed out of most of the city.
Leon, who has repeatedly said the Tobruk-based parliament is Libya's legitimate legislature, nevertheless stressed that dialogue and "flexibility" were the only way to resolve the country's conflict.
"The small window of opportunity before us for a peaceful resolution to the current crisis should not be missed," he told the Security Council.

FG defends $9.3m cash seized in SA, releases data on transaction
Nigerian Government has defended the controversial $9.3million seized from a private jet by South African immigration on September 5th. In a diplomatic discussion it opened with the South African government yesterday September 16th, FG said they are aware of the deal (money was meant to procure arms) and have presented documents on the transaction process to the South African govt as proof that the entire operation involving the seized aircraft belonging to CAN president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, was genuine. Continue...
A source who spoke with Vanguard confirmed the on-going discussion between the two governments and said the seized aircraft has been released by the South African government. The source added that the money was seized following failure by Nigerian delegates to declare the money at South African airport
"Nigeria and South Africa are getting closer to diplomatic resolution of the row over the $9.3m transaction. The two nations have opened discussions. The Federal Government has submitted relevant data and documents on the transaction to South Africa and insisted that the transaction was legitimate. It also clarified that the funds were neither laundered nor smuggled for any covert manoeuvres. No launderer will be audacious to fly into a country in a chartered jet with such huge cash. The technical details on security matters, which necessitated the deal had been availed South Africa for screening. Based on initial scrutiny of the documents, the Challenger Jet has been released pending conclusion of a full-scale investigation by South Africa. There was procedural error at the airport, the team did not declare the $9.3million contrary to the aviation and Customs laws of South Africa. So, there was an oversight on the part of the delegation that went to complete the transaction. Nigeria is trying to complete the formality and we are confident that the cash will be released for the purpose it was meant for. Movement of cash for strategic purchase of security equipment by intelligence services is not new; it is a global trend. The FBI, KGB, MOSSAD and others do it.” the source said

I deserve an award for pioneering indigenious rap music in Nigeria - Lord of Ajasa
In an interview with Punch this week, indigenous rap artiste, Olusegun Osaniyi popularly known as Lord of Ajasa, who was quite popular in the early/mid 2000s, says he deserves an award for pioneering indigenous rap music in Nigeria. He said the new generation of indigenous artists sing 'nonsense' and still get endorsement, while they have been forgotten. Below is what he said...
"I pioneered indigenous rap music and today it has become lucrative and fashionable. Yet, these young musicians shy away from that fact. They try to hide it. If I don’t blow my trumpet, nobody will do it. But I deserve an award, recognition and endorsement because a lot of people look up to me as their mentor. Look at Eedris Abdulkareem and 9ice, for instance. I’m saying they should take care of the pioneers, but what impact have these new artistes really made in the society to deserve all the endorsements they are getting? I mean, they sing nonsense songs while we (pioneers) do evergreen and clean music. Yet they keep discouraging us. 2face is an exception I am okay with his brand of music, because his endorsements are well-deserved.”
Lord of Ajasa, who shot to stardom in 2005 with his single Otiya, blamed his down slide in the music industry to some decisions he took
"I left the music scene after I got married in 2009 to delve into other businesses. I started this movement long before these small boys emerged on the scene and I paved the way for many of them. When I began, I didn’t know anything about music and entertainment. I was simply making music for the love of it, while 9ice and Olamide were following my footsteps. Whenever I made a mistake, they learned from it and got better. I was just a naïve village boy who came down to Lagos from Ondo State with no guidance. I never knew the big names in Nigerian entertainment at the time,” he says.

Nigeria Military fires GOC attacked by convicted soldiers
The Nigeria Military authorities have retired the former General Officer Commanding the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Maj. Gen. Abubakar Mohammed, who was attacked by soldiers at their barracks in Maiduguri on May 14th. The soldiers have since been sentenced to death for that action by a military court.
According to Punch, Mohammed was retired after he was recalled to the Headquarters of the Nigerian Army without posting for months after the soldiers’ attempt on his life.
It was gathered from a top military source in Abuja that the Army authorities quietly retired him last month.
The source said, “The Maj. Gen. has been retired; you don’t expect that to be made public; issues of retirement especially in the military are confidential. The man was at the Army headquarters for some time. He was awaiting posting then but he was eventually retired about a month ago.”
Meanwhile, the NLC, TUC and human rights lawyers have urged the Presidency and the Army Council chaired by the Minister of Defence to prevail on the military authorities to spare the lives of the 12 soldiers.

Samsung takes 'genius' pot shots at iPhone 6
It didn't take long and most will probably not be surprised that
Samsung has launched a volley of ads making fun of Apple's foray into
wearable technology and the latest iPhone.
Apple on Tuesday launched a widely expected Watch designed to connect users to the iPhone, but the South Korean firm which has already released a number of wearable devices produced adverts making fun of the California company.
The ads which are titled "It doesn't take a genius", are heavy with sarcasm at Apple products, while highlighting the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 which was released in early September.
The ads feature two geniuses as a pun on Apple store employees which bumble through the features of the latest iPhone.
Samsung is often criticised as a "follower" of Apple products but the company was the first to launch large format smartphones which have spawned a new market segment widely credited with eating into the share of tablet.
Both companies are engaged in a bitter US legal struggle over patent infringements that has often spilled over to social media attacks.
The Samsung phablets as they have become known, have also re-introduced the concept of a stylus to interact with the devices.
Release cycle
The growth of the sector is a factor that inevitably convinced Apple to abandon its smaller-screen only format of the iPhone, much as the growth of smaller tablets convinced the company to introduce the iPad Mini.
While Samsung's products have not always been perfect on launch, the company has adopted a much faster release cycle which has become typical in the fast-moving tech sector.
Apple has stuck to its schedule of releasing the latest iPhone in September even though rumours circulated in June that the company would move its timetable forward to beat rivals' announcements.
The latest iPhone series is expected to be on the shelves on 19 September, though it is unclear when the device will be available in SA.
That hasn't stopped online retailer kalahari.com from announcing the 16GB iPhone 6 as the cheapest for R12 999 with expected availability set for 31 October.
For its part Samsung on Wednesday announced availability of its Galaxy Alpha flagship in SA for R8 999 or R499 on contract from Vodacom.

Reds suffer Sturridge blow
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge will miss up to six matches after
injuring himself while on international duty with England, manager
Brendan Rodgers has revealed.
Sturridge, 25, strained his thigh in a training session last Friday, forcing him to miss England's 2-0 win over Switzerland in their opening Euro 2016 qualifier on Monday.
Rodgers told a press conference on Thursday that Sturridge would be out for "up to three weeks".
He therefore stands to miss three Premier League games, including the derby against Everton on September 27, a League Cup tie against Middlesbrough, and Liverpool's first two Champions League group games.
Sturridge sustained the injury 36 hours after playing for 89 minutes in England's 1-0 friendly win over Norway and Rodgers believes the player should have been given more time to recover.
"We're obviously disappointed because we feel it was an injury which could have been prevented," the Liverpool manager told talkSPORT radio station.
"I think clubs work differently at times to international teams. It's more the recovery strategy. When we look at our players here, we look at them individually in terms of what their needs are.
"Fast players would have a second day recovery, while other players can work on that day. When you are that type of quick player like Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling and boys like Danny Welbeck, you need to recover them.
"He (Sturridge) has worked so hard over pre-season and looked very fit and strong in our last game against Tottenham."
In Sturridge's absence, new signing Mario Balotelli is expected to make his home debut in Saturday's home game with Aston Villa.
Rodgers also revealed that another new signing, midfielder Emre Can, will be sidelined for up to six weeks due to an ankle problem picked up on international duty with Germany Under-21s.

Costa named EPL Player of the Month
Diego Costa has taken the English Premiership like a duck to water and has now picked up his first award in England.
The Premier League named Costa the Player of the Month for August.
Spanish striker Diego Costa has scored in every league fixture so far for Chelsea after joining in the summer from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.
Jose Mourinho splashed out £32 million to lure Costa from Atletico Madrid and his early season form has left the Blues boss convinced that hefty price tag will look cheap by the end of the season.
Costa bagged a brace in the Blues 6-3 win over Everton while the profilic frontman also found the back of the net against Burnley and Leicester City.
Jose Mourinho's high-flying Chelsea host second placed Swansea City on Saturday, September 13 with Costa looking to continue his goal-scoring exploits for his new club.

Welbeck not United standard
Louis van Gaal launched a scathing attack on critics who suggested Manchester United had abandoned their youth philosophy.
Sky Sports report that Danny Welbeck was not up to the level that Manchester United expects.
Louis van Gaal was responding to criticism that Manchester United had let a youth product go in favour of expense foreign imports.
"Danny Welbeck had been here since he was nine, but after he came back from Sunderland, he does not have the record of Rooney or Van Persie, and that is the standard," said the United boss.
"And we have Falcao."
"Today, in training, he had one chance and it is a goal. That's why we had to let him (Welbeck) go.” said van Gaal.
Van Gaal still believes that the Manchester United youth academy will have a major role going forward even after Tom Lawrence, Tom Cleverley and Michael Keane all left in the summer clearout at Old Trafford.
The youth is the policy of Manchester United," he said. "When we let go players to other clubs, it is to allow the youth players to have a chance.
"We want to give youth players a chance and the question now is 'can they take this chance?'
“It's of course more risky but Manchester United has always home-grown players in the squad and it's the only way to do it."

Breaking news. Oscar Pistorius found guilty of manslaughter
Yesterday Oscar Pistorius was found not guilty of premeditated murder
and second degree murder because according to the judge, his conduct
after the shooting was 'inconsistent' with someone who intended to
commit murder. But he has been found guilty of manslaughter this
morning. The judge said he acted negligently when he fired shots into
the toilet door. The question now is, will he be jailed for
manslaughter?
*He was also found not guilty of the first firearm charge - (firing a gun through the roof of his car)
*He was found not guilty of the third firearm charge (unlawfully possessing 38 rounds of ammunition at his home without having a license).
*He was found guilty of the second firearm charge. He discharged a weapon in a public place, a restaurant called Tashas and asked his friend to take the blame. The judge says Oscar was sufficiently trained in the use of firearms, so should not have asked for a firearm in a public place
The judge said no one submitted that there was an intention to pull the trigger, but that does not absolve him of the crime of negligently handling a firearm. Will Oscar walk?

20 year old Samantha Taylor (pictured above) said she feared he would kill her and revealed she once hid his gun after he flew into a rage at her.
Oscar was cleared of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp yesterday, but Samantha said: “It could have been me.”
Samantha said she was left with bruises and scars after the Blade Runner bit and pinched her, but she was also tortured mentally by him during the 18-month relationship. Continue...
She also described how he once left her paralysed with fear when he
used his beloved Porsche as a weapon, driving her at up to 200mph to
“punish” her.
Pistorius shot Reeva, 29, on Valentine’s Day 2013. And since that moment, Samantha has had nightmares.
Shuddering, she said:

Pistorius shot Reeva, 29, on Valentine’s Day 2013. And since that moment, Samantha has had nightmares.
Shuddering, she said:
“What happened to Reeva Steenkamp could so easily have happened to me. I definitely think that could have been me – without a doubt – many, many, many times.”Samantha first met Pistorius in 2010 when she was 16 and he was 23 at a rugby match, but they did not start dating for another year.
Speaking of one ordeal, she said:
“He gets so mad, so angry he can’t even speak. He was trying to string his words together, spitting, shouting, grabbing. It was horrible. He used to bite me a lot, pinch me in anger and in fun. I had bruises and scars. It was painful.”
Sam and her mum
Another time the couple rowed when he accused her of sticking up for one of her ex-boyfriends.
She said:
“I was really scared. He made me stand on the stairs and shouted at me. It was like I was on the naughty step.”But one night, things got so bad she thought he was going to shoot her at his home in Pretoria, South Africa, with the gun he would later turn on Reeva.
Samantha said:
“I had to hide his gun, I was so scared of him. We had friends over for dinner, at his house and we’d all had a little to drink but I think he was going for one that night.
“He was on the hard liquor. He moved all the couches and set the floor on fire and danced around it. It was a marble floor and he used alcohol to light it on fire. He slipped and he chipped his tooth.
“But because he was so drunk he thought I’d beaten him up. He started screaming at me. He was looking for his gun. He was saying I was a bitch because I beat him up. ‘What kind of person are you? You bitch.’ I felt threatened. Both of us went upstairs to bed and I was walking a bit in front of him."
"When I got to the room I hid his gun, because I really did think he’d use it. I hid it under the bed knowing he wouldn’t look there. He kept that gun, the one used on Reeva, on his table or by his prosthetic legs on the floor.
"He slept on the right near the windows and he never kept that gun under the bed, like he claimed in his statement.
"He kept telling me I was a bitch because his lip was cut, but I think he realised things had gone too far.” The next day the couple went to a wedding.
She said: “We rushed and he didn’t realise he had left his gun at home and he said to me ‘Oh my word, where’s my gun?’ I told him why I had hidden it.
"He didn’t apologise but didn’t want to acknowledge what had happened.”
Pistorius would vanish for nights of boozing, partying and chatting up impressionable women.
But when the couple were apart for longer periods, like when Oscar had athletics events abroad, his jealousy erupted.
Samantha said:
“His jealousy was very tough. He’d phone my mum and dad 10 times a day to find out where I was. In one month I received around 700 calls. It was excessive. If I hadn’t replied to messages within 30 seconds I was doing something wrong.”Miming taking a selfie, she explained:
“I had to show him photos ‘look at me in my pyjamas – I’m not out! Look I’m watching TV, sitting with my brother.’ He’s a very insecure man. He’d call at all hours. I was scared of him at times because he had very bad anger issues. He was so possessive, he would look through my phone and find a photo from long ago or look on my Facebook, and often get quite angry.
“It was horrible, when you are in a relationship you want someone to trust you. He never allowed me to wear make-up and would make me take my belly ring out.
"If we were going out he would just give me a few minutes so I would not have time to get ready. He didn’t like me dressing up and other men looking at me.”Samantha said everywhere Pistorius went his gun went with him – tucked in his “pants”. She also struggled to keep up with his rapidly changing personality – switching from sweet and charming to sobbing and suicidal.
She said:
“He would arrive at my house at 5am drunk and wake everyone up. He had a temper. Everyone has a switch inside of them, but when his went off he couldn’t control it. You just have to be calm with him. Not react to it.
“He shouted at me for random stuff, like if his coffee wasn’t made. He would get angry about weird things that shouldn’t really get to someone. He screamed and shouted at me a lot. He’s got quite a foul mouth.”

4th American with Ebola to be flown to US for care
A fourth American who contracted Ebola in West Africa was expected to
arrive in the US for care on Tuesday and will be treated at an Atlanta
hospital where two other aid workers successfully recovered from the
disease, the hospital said on Monday.
Air Force spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel James Wilson said the patient, as in past cases, would be flown into Dobbins Air Reserve Base outside Atlanta.
Emory University Hospital said in a news release that the patient would be treated there but cited confidentiality in not releasing more information about the person.
The World Health Organisation, however, said one of its doctors who has been working in an Ebola treatment center in Sierra Leone has tested positive for the disease. It said the doctor was in stable condition Monday in Freetown and will be evacuated. The State Department said the doctor was from the US.
Experimental treatments
Last month, two aid workers who contracted Ebola while working in Liberia were treated successfully at Emory. A third patient, an American doctor, who is being treated in Nebraska, appeared to be better tolerating his experimental treatments on Monday, but his recovery remains uncertain.
The family of Dr Rick Sacra said he was able to eat breakfast Monday for the first time since arriving Friday at the Nebraska Medical Centre in Omaha.
The 51-year-old remains in stable condition. But his wife, Debbie, said Sacra is more alert and that they had a half-hour conversation by video conference on Sunday.
"He hasn't been able to eat much since he got here, but he had some toast and apple sauce," Debbie Sacra said. "He also tolerated the research drug well — better than he had the previous doses he was given."
Rick Sacra, a doctor from Worcester, Massachusetts, spent 15 years working at the Liberia hospital where he fell ill. He was practicing family medicine in Liberia with the North Carolina-based charity SIM.
Authorities say roughly 2 100 people have died during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, but Ebola hasn't been confirmed as the cause of all those deaths.
Isolation units
Sacra is being treated with an experimental drug that is different than the one given to the two Americans treated for Ebola at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Nancy Writebol, who also worked for the SIM mission, and Dr Kent Brantly, who worked for another missionary group, Samaritan's Purse, in Liberia, have recovered.
Sacra came to Omaha instead of Atlanta because federal officials asked the medical centre to treat him in order to prepare other isolation units to take more Ebola patients if needed.
Sacra's doctors have refused to name the drug they are using, but they say they've been consulting with experts on Ebola on his treatment.
Dr Aneesh Mehta of Emory University said on Monday that it was impossible to know if the experimental ZMapp they received worked.
But Mehta said Emory doctors have been advising other physicians that some particular types of supportive care did seem to help. Those included switching between different types of IV fluids to meet each patient's specific electrolyte needs at the time. And giving high-quality liquid nutrition to boost their levels of protein and other nutrients "to help build back that immune system that was under attack".
Vaccines for Ebola
Mehta and other experts were discussing Ebola at the American Society for Microbiology meeting on Monday.
Pharmaceutical companies are developing vaccines for Ebola and drugs to help treat the virus, but they're not fully tested or readily available yet.
Dr. Gary Kobinger of the Public Health Agency of Canada helped pioneer the research that led to ZMapp, and he said the US manufacturer appears to be on track for a Phase 1 safety study early next year, perhaps as early as January, although no drug is available currently.
On the vaccine front, Kobinger said a Canadian-made candidate should be starting Phase 1 trials within weeks.
WHO has suggested turning to the blood of Ebola survivors as an experimental treatment, and Sacra's doctors have said they are considering that.

UK to set up Ebola centre in Sierra Leone
Britain is to set up a medical centre to treat victims of the Ebola
epidemic in Sierra Leone, the international development secretary said
on Monday.
The 62-bed centre near the capital Freetown is planned to be open in eight weeks' time and will be built and operated by military engineers and medical staff.
The worst-ever outbreak of the disease has killed 491 people in Sierra Leone, which is one of three countries at the centre of an epidemic that has claimed over 2 000 lives so far.
"The scale of the problem requires the entire international community to do more to assist the affected countries which is why the UK is working with the Government of Sierra Leone to build a new medical treatment facility near their capital Freetown," said international development secretary Justine Greening.
"When it is up and running it will enable the UK to provide medical care for local and international health workers, as well as treatment for the wider population."
In the long term charity Save the Children may manage the centre, which will have 12 beds dedicated for local and international medical volunteers, the government said.
A British nurse infected with Ebola while working in Sierra Leone recovered from the disease after he was flown out of Africa by military plane and treated in a London hospital.

US Air Marshal in ‘quarantine’ after syringe attack at Lagos airport
A US Air Mashal is in quarantine in Houston today after being allegedly
attacked yesterday by an unknown assailant at the Murtala Mohammed
International Airport, Lagos, wielding a syringe.
The FBI said he was screened “on-scene… out of an abundance of caution.” An FBI spokesperson said,
U.S. air marshals travel undercover in plain clothes and it would not be immediately obvious to an attacker that his target was an American law enforcement agent, officials say.
U.S. law enforcement officials told ABC News they were alarmed by the bizarre, unprovoked attack because the assailant was apparently able to inject an unknown substance into the back of one of the air marshal’s arms. The air marshal was traveling with a team of other marshals when the attack took place in an unsecured area of the airport terminal in Lagos, the officials said. He was able to board the United Airlines flight to Houston he was scheduled to work and was met early this morning in Houston by FBI agents and health workers from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). ContinueAmid fears the substance could contain some form of the Ebola virus, the air marshal was immediately put into quarantine.
The FBI said he was screened “on-scene… out of an abundance of caution.” An FBI spokesperson said,
“The victim did not exhibit any signs of illness during the flight and was transported to a hospital upon landing for further testing. None of the testing conducted has indicated a danger to other passengers.”Health experts say most infectious agents would not immediately manifest or make the patient contagious. While the unknown assailant ran away and could not be located, officials said the other air marshals on the team were able to secure the needle and bring it on the flight for testing in the U.S.

“While there is no immediate intelligence to confirm this was a targeted attack, this is our reminder that international cowards will attempt to take sneaky lethal shots at our honorable men and women abroad,” said Jon Adler, the national president of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association.Source: ABC News
Ebola: Doctors reject September 22 schools resumption date
The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has rejected
the Monday September 22nd resumption directive given by FG to all
Primary and Secondary schools due to the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria.
The NMA speaking through its National
Publicity Secretary, Dr Olawunmi Layaki, said they expect all
schools to remain closed until December or early next year when all Ebola suspects under
surveillance have been cleared
and certified free of the virus. Government should have enough time to follow the standard procedure for containing the virus. Parents have no reason to be in a hurry because if Ebola should enter any school, it will assume another dimension. Children cannot survive isolation like adults. Nigeria is peculiar because of her large population and we should be pragmatic and proactive. It will not augur well for the country if we have another outbreak due to carelessness.” it said
In the same vein, the chairman of
the Lagos state chapter of the association, Dr Tope Ojo said most public
schools lack basic hygienic facilities and this would expose the
students to easy spread of the virus.
"It would not have cost the Federal Government anything to have waited till those under surveillance have completed the 21 days in all the states where they are being monitored. The government knows that it takes a longer time for children to get used to the idea of hygiene and sanitation. They are even more vulnerable because they would play with each other whether they are sick or not. How many children know that they should use hand sanitizers or avoid contact with anybody that has fever? Waiting till October when at least the situations in Rivers and Lagos states would have been conclusively managed is another safety measure the government should have taken. These kids are not studying to get a degree, so we are sure it would not have affected schools’ curricula.” he said
Obama condemns Ray Rice after sickening video of him knocking out his fiancée surfaces
This incident happened back in February at the Revel Casino and in March, Janay Palmer, the woman who was assaulted, went ahead to marry Ray. The NFL knew the incident happened because Ray was charged with felony aggravated assault and he was given a two-game suspension by the NFL for domestic violence. But everything changed when TMZ released the video yesterday and people saw exactly what Ray did to his fiancee.
Now the Baltimore Ravens have not only terminated his $40 million contract, the President of the US, the governor of Maryland, the NFL, and some of his teammates have all released statements condemning his action. Some people are asking that he be banned from the NFL forever. Continue...
President Obama's statement via his spokesperson;
"The president is the father of two daughters, and like any American, he believes that domestic violence is contemptible and unacceptable in a civilized society," Earnest said. "Hitting a woman is not something a real man does, and that's true whether or not an act of violence happens in the public eye, or, far too often, behind closed doors. Stopping domestic violence is something that's bigger than football, and all of us have a responsibility to put a stop to it."The Governor's statement;
"The video released this morning of this domestic assault was horrible, shocking, and reprehensible. Everyone can do more to help end the scourge of domestic violence.
Fans burnt Ray Rice's jersey
Ravens coach John Harbaugh said he met
with Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, team president Dick Cass and general
manager Ozzie Newsome after they saw the video, and they decided to Ray go.
"It's something we saw for the first time today, all of us," Harbaugh said yesterday "It changed things, of course. It made things a little bit different."
Speaking about the incident back in July, Ray said;
'My daughter is 2 years old now. One day she's going to know the power of Google. Me having to explain that to her, what happened that night, that's something I have to live with the rest of my life. I know that's not who I am as a man. That's not who my mom raised me to be. If anybody knows me, they know I was raised by a single parent, and that was my mother. I let her down, I let my wife down, I let my daughter down. I let my wife's parents down. I let the whole Baltimore community down. I let my teammates down. I let so many people down because of 30 seconds of my life that I know I can't take back.'
Actor Seth Rogen called him a piece of garbage |
Ray and Janay have been together since 2008 and have a three year old daughter...
The TMZ report yesterday that ruined Ray Rice
This is what a two game suspension looks like -- Ray Rice delivering a vicious punch to his fiancee's face, knocking her out cold ... and TMZ Sports has the shocking video.
We've already shown you the aftermath outside the elevator ... Rice dragging the unconscious woman on the floor. But we've now obtained video of the punch that put her down, raising the question ... What was the NFL thinking when it wrist-slapped Rice with such feeble punishment?
The incident took place Feb. 15th at the Revel Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City -- after Ray and then-fiancee (now wife) Janay Palmer got into a heated argument on their way into the elevator.
Inside the elevator it's apparent he strikes first ... she hits back ... and then Rice delivers the knockout blow.
The punch knocks Janay off her feet -- and she smashes her head on the elevator hand rail ... knocking her out cold. Ray doesn't seem phased ... and when the door opens, he drags her out into the hotel.
An employee of the hotel -- tells TMZ Sports he was working there at the time and says the NFL saw the elevator footage before imposing the 2-game suspension.
FYI -- Ray and Janay got married one month after the attack.
UPDATE -- The NFL says it did NOT see the newly-released elevator footage before it imposed a 2 game suspension on Rice.
This video is a cleaned up version of the raw surveillance elevator video -- the raw is jerky ... so we smoothed it out.
